Anderson, Wy Earn U.S. Women’s National Team Call-Ups

Bear Keepers Headed To Carson For USWNT Camp

Two goalkeepers -  one past and one present -  from the California women's soccer team have been called up to the U.S. Women's National Team and Youth National Team training camps, respectively, as announced by U.S. Soccer on Wednesday. Cal graduate and current member of Angel City FC Angelina Anderson was invited to join the senior team while the Golden Bears' current starter Teagan Wy was invited to the Futures Camp.

Led by new USWNT head coach Emma Hayes, both camps will run concurrently from Jan. 14-21 at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson. The Futures Camp is a youth team call-up featuring up-and-coming Women's National Team prospects who are all age-eligible for the U.S. Under-23 WNT.

This will be Anderson's first experience with the senior team, but not her first go-around with U.S. Soccer as she served as the starting goalkeeper and captain for the U17 team at the 2018 FIFA Women's World Cup in Uruguay. She also joined the U20 roster during the 2018 FIFA Women's World Cup later that summer. Anderson is one of four goalkeepers on the 26-player roster that earned an invitation and is one of six uncapped players who are all first-time call-ups.

Anderson was selected by Angel City FC with the 27th overall pick of the 2023 NWSL Draft and has made eight starts for the club. She has collected 35 saves in 720 minutes over the past two seasons. As a Bear, Anderson was one of the top goalkeepers in program history, finishing her career with the second-most shutouts (26) and the fifth-most saves (242). A three-time All-Pac-12 selection, Anderson was named the Pac-12 Goalkeeper of the Year and Pac-12 Freshman of the Year in 2019.

"Having known Angie for many years, we have long since admired her commitment to her craft," Cal head coach Neil McGuire said. "She has worked tirelessly to develop herself into one of the world's best goalkeepers and deserves this opportunity. We are excited to see the next phase unfold."

Wy has been involved with US Soccer for the past seven years, from her first involvement at the U14 level to earning her first invitation to the USWNT Futures Camp next week. She is coming off an incredible performance as the starting keeper for the U20 FIFA Women's World Cup where she helped bring home a bronze medal, making key plays down the stretch - including a walk-off PK save that put the Americans into the semifinals. She also led the U15 team to a gold medal at the 2018 CONCACAF Championship by beating Mexico, El Salvador and Portugal.

A two-time all-conference selection, Wy just wrapped up her junior season with the Bears and was named Second Team All-ACC despite missing a handful of matches to compete in U20 FIFA Women's World Cup. Wy showed up big when the lights were brightest, making a career-high nine saves vs. No. 3 North Carolina, including a PK save in that match with just 11 seconds to go before the Bears ultimately fell to the eventual national champions. She picked up her first shutout of the season vs. No. 16 Pitt, making five saves in the win, and added five more saves in 56 scoreless minutes against No. 1 Duke before leaving the match with an injury. Wy capped off the season with another seven saves on the road at No. 4 Arkansas in the second round of the NCAA Championships.

"Teagan has proven herself to be one of the best goalkeepers in the world in her age range after her incredible performances in the recent U20 World Cup," McGuire said. "This call up to the futures camp shows the US federation sees great value in her talent and we are looking forward to seeing her flourish."

A common denominator in the successes of Cal goalkeepers from Anderson and Wy to all-time saves leaders Emily Boyd and Emily Kruger is associate head coach and goalkeeper coach Cori Callahan. Under Callahan's direction, those four Bear keepers have rewritten the program's record book and have amassed 11 all-conference honors.

"Angie and Teagan's US National team call ups showcase their incredible talents," McGuire said. "Both developed their craft under the tutelage of Cori Callahan, whose daily investment and care helped sharpen their skill sets and prepare them for the top level. Cori is a very special person with a gift for coaching the elite goalkeeper."
