Bears Win Doubles Openers At ITA NW Regionals

BERKELEY – The California women's tennis team opened the ITA Northwest Regional Championships with two wins Friday at the Hellman Tennis Complex, with the tandems of Sophie Hernandez and Tiziana-Marie Schomburg as well as Anya Murthy and Naomi Xu dominating their opponents in main draw doubles.
 
In the round of 64, Schomburg and Hernandez dispatched Santa Clara's Jamie Pope and Anna Rahman 8-2, while Xu and Murthy bested Eastern Washington's Maria Lopez and Aneliss Zafirescu 8-1.
 
Cal is co-hosting regionals with Saint Mary's, with Saturday's matches in Berkeley featuring several Bears competing in doubles and in main draw singles. Players from 17 schools are competing for singles and doubles titles at regionals along with chances to qualify for the NCAA Singles Championship and NCAA Doubles Championship.
 
Saturday's matches at Cal start with the second round of main draw doubles at 9 a.m. PT, with main draw singles slated to start at 11:30 a.m. PT at Hellman. Please check the draws for times and matchups in Berkeley and Moraga.
 
The ITA event concludes Tuesday.
