Cal Loses In Four To Boston College

Bears Fall To 2-4 In ACC Play

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – The California volleyball team lost its fourth-straight contest on Sunday, facing Boston College at the Connell Recreation Center as the Eagles (13-4, 2-3 ACC) triumphed in four sets, 27-25, 22-25, 25-21, 25-11. The Golden Bears are now 5-11 on the year and 2-4 in ACC play.

For the second-straight match, Mikayla Hayden led the team in two categories with 12 kills on .417 hitting and five blocks. Dominique Phills added another nine kills, while Peyton DeJardin was efficient off the bench with seven at a .316 clip.

Boston College's Audrey Ross led the court with 19 kills on .316 hitting, while the Eagles' Sam Hoppes added another 13 (.310). Their other standouts included Lucy Mott, who recorded a double-double (27 assists, 15 digs), and Danica Rach, who had five of her team's 14 service aces.

The Bears out-hit the Eagles in the first set, .278 to .219, as Hayden scored the first point of the match with an off-the-block kill – the first of her six offensive scores in the set. A four-point run with three kills from Carbonara triggered a Boston College timeout at 11-9, followed by a five-point run with two aces from the Eagles in kind to go up 14-11 and force a Cal timeout. The two teams each put together one more sequence of four consecutive points as the Bears forced extra points and took a 25-24 lead before Boston College scored twice more to claim the 1-0 set advantage.

Set Two belonged to the Bears as they out-hit the Eagles once again (.250 to .216) thanks to five kills and no errors on 10 swings from Dominique Phills. Cal found itself on the wrong side of an 11-7 score after Boston College scored four-straight points, but the Bears clawed their way back and finally retook the lead on the final sequence of the set, earning the last four scores to tie up the match.

Cal jumped out to a 3-0 lead to start the third and eventually stretched their advantage to five (11-6), but a six-point response from Boston College flipped the script and triggered a back-and-forth battle that fell in favor of the Eagles despite the Bears out-hitting them for the third-straight set (.355 to .314). For the first time all match, the Bears did not score the first point of the fourth set, setting the tone for the rest of the day; a nine-point Eagles run to bring the score to 15-6, followed by a five-score run seven points later, helped the home team take the lead for good and close out the match shortly afterwards.
