Cal Concludes Road Trip At UC Davis
Marks Last Contest Before Season Finale
The California field hockey team is looking to rebound as it heads on the road to face UC Davis at the Aggie Field Hockey Facility on Friday at 12 p.m. PT.
Â
This marks the second game against UC Davis this season as the Bears won the previous matchup 4-1 at Underhill Field in September. In that game
Olivia Sharratt and
Zara Schmitz each scored a pair of goals marking the first multi-goal games of their careers.
Â
After this game, the Bears have just one contest remaining on their schedule and will wait to see their seed in the upcoming ACC Tournament and whether or not they will earn an at-large berth into the NCAA Tournament.
Â
Cal is 33-7-1 all-time against UC Davis and has won nine in a row in the series.
Â
The Bears are coming off of losses to Louisville and No. 5 Wake Forest.
Â
Last Time Out
- Against Louisville, Sharratt scored Cal's lone goal after receiving a perfect ariel from Maya Hoepfner and scored a crafty goal from just a few feet off the side of the cage. It marked her sixth goal of the season.
Â
- Against Wake Forest Liz Klompmaker and Schmitz each scored a goal but it wasn't enough as Cal had to defend 18 shots from the Demon Deacons. Delphine Ayitey-Hammond tied her career high with seven saves.
Â
2025 Team Notes
Â
- ACC Players of the Week: Hammond and Klompmaker were named ACC Co-Defensive and Offensive Players of the Week last week following Cal's sweep of Boston College and No. 5 Syracuse. Hammond had 13 saves across both games and Liz's game-winning goal against Syracuse marked her 11th of the season.
Â
- 12 different Bears have registered at least one assist on Cal's 32 goals this season. Schalk leads the team with seven, which ranks seventh in the ACC.
Â
- Klompmaker has 27 career goals and is just two away from tying for the 10th spot on Cal's all-time career list.
Â
- Hammond is second in the ACC in saves (45) and tied for third in shutouts (2) for the season.
Â
- Against five ranked teams (Harvard, North Carolina, Virginia, Syracuse and Duke) Cal is averaging 4.8 saves per game.
Â
- The Bears have been a tough out at home this year. The only losses have come to ranked opponents (No. 10 Harvard, No. 3 Virginia) in one-score games.
Â
Â
- Three Bears have had multi-goal games this season: Klompmaker (2), Schmitz (1) and Sharratt (1).
Â
- Cal ranks fourth in the country in penalty corner conversion percentage, converting on 9 of 35 attempts (25.7%).

2024 Recap
The California field hockey team finished its inaugural season as a member of the ACC with an overall record of 7-10 after a 6-1 start. The Golden Bears were featured in the Penn Monto/NFHCA DI National Coaches Poll three times throughout the season, marking their first appearance in the rankings since 2018.
Â
The Bears advanced to the ACC Championship for the first time in program history and fell 5-0 in the first round to North Carolina, which captured the conference tournament title. The Donna Fong Director of Field Hockey,
Shellie Onstead, secured her 300th career win in a 2-1 regular-season victory against Louisville, which also gave the program its first-ever ACC matchup win.
Â
The Bears were led by ACC Freshman of the Year
Liz Klompmaker, who led the team in points (31), goals (15) and game-winning goals (5). Klompmaker registered at least two goals in six games during the 2024 campaign.
Canisha van Duyn made an immediate impact in her lone season at Cal, leading the Bears in assists (11) and defensive saves (7) while ranking second on the team in points (17). Both Klompmaker and van Duyn were named to the NFHCA All-Region and All-ACC Teams.
Â
300 wins
Onstead is now one of just eight active head coaches in the country to have reached the 300-win club and currently has 306 wins. She is also one of just 23 all-time head coaches to reach the milestone.
Â
Fresh Faces
The Golden Bears welcome 11 new players to this year's roster, which includes six freshmen and five transfers. Highlighting this year's newcomers are freshman
Emma Becker and graduate transfer
Lieve Schalk. Becker was a standout for her club team, the Dusseldorfer Hockey Club, while Schalk was a full-time starter at Iowa and helped the Hawkeyes earn three-straight NCAA Tournament bids from 2021-23.
Â
Returning Experience
Cal has plenty of experience as it returns six full-time starters from last season highlighted by Klompmaker, who was named to the Preseason All-ACC Team. Also expected to make an impact is goalkeeper
Delphine Ayitey-Hammond, who missed last year due to injury but helped the Suribton Hockey Club win the 2024 EuroHockey Club Championship prior to coming to Cal.
