BERKELEY – The California field hockey team (8-7, 3-5 ACC) closed the regular season with a 3-1 victory against Stanford (7-9, 2-6 ACC) on Thursday night at Underhill Field.
"This was a classic Cal-Stanford game that is now enhanced with the ACC scheduling that makes it the final game of the regular season," Donna Fong Director of Field Hockey
Shellie Onstead said. "The home field always will play a role and it isn't surprising to me that this game mirrors last year's final contest at Stanford. I really want to acknowledge the role of the crowd and the positivity they created. We had families here from all over the world, as well as students, alumni and friends. The game was a bit chaotic on both sides, but I attribute that to the environment of the rivalry game on senior night. In the end, we stuck to our playing principles and got the key individual performances we needed surrounded by teamwork - both on the field and on the bench. Hats off to the senior class as well! On Saturday, we will learn what's next for us in the ACC tournament."
The Golden Bears closed the 2025 campaign with a 6-2 record on their home turf after
Liz Klompmaker found the back of the net twice, while
Holly Pears added one goal in the contest.
Stanford struck first after earning its lone goal of the night halfway through the second quarter. Cal evened the score after
Agustina Daud perfectly set up Pears for the equalizer late in the first half.
Klompmaker put the Bears ahead for the remainder of the game after securing two goals in the fourth quarter to help give Cal the 3-1 win on senior day. Klompmaker clinched her third game of the season with at least two goals.
On Sunday, the Bears were selected as the fifth seed in the ACC Championship and will face fourth-seeded Duke on Tuesday at 9:30 a.m. PT in Louisville, Kentucky. Should Cal advance it will take on the winner of the tournament's first match between No. 1 North Carolina and No. 8 Louisville. All ACC Championship matches will be aired on ACC Network.
