BERKELEY – Despite trailing by two goals with just eight minutes to go, the California women's soccer team found a way to earn a result against No. 1 Virginia Thursday night at Edwards Stadium. The Golden Bears scored a pair of late goals in a four-minute span, including a deep equalizer from junior
Soleil Dimry in the 88th minute to draw with the Cavaliers 2-2.
"We couldn't be prouder of this team and our second half performance," Cal head coach
Neil McGuire said. "Virginia is an incredible team and deserving of their number one ranking. Our players showed grit and determination and should now realize how capable they are of this level of performance."
Cal (6-2-7, 2-1-3) earned a point in the ACC standings to move into a tie for fifth place, while the Hoos (10-0-2, 4-0-1) saw their six-match win streak end.
UVA opened the match with a pair of quick goals in the 13th and 15th minutes giving the team a lead that it would hold on to for 83 minutes.
In the 84th minute, the Hoos committed a handball inside of the 18-yard box granting the Bears a penalty kick.
Lumi Kostmayer stepped to the spot and scored just the fourth goal allowed by Virigina this season to cut the lead in half.

Mia Fontana played a ball up to Dimry who dribbled into space. The junior dribbled into space and fired a shot from 40 yards out that carried perfectly into the top right corner of the goal.

Teagan Wy was a huge part of the result tallying seven saves with five coming in the scoreless second half.
Cal will now look ahead to Sunday's senior day game with Virginia Tech at 1 p.m. at Edwards Stadium.
