Park, Pickett Named ACC Players Of The Week
Junhwan Park and
D'Andre Pickett earned ACC Player of the Week honors for leading the California men's soccer team to a 1-0 upset of No. 1 Stanford on Halloween in Berkeley, the conference announced Tuesday. Park shared the ACC Offensive Player of the Week honor with Virginia Tech's Declan Quill, while Pickett claimed the ACC Defensive Player of the Week award.
Â
The result gave Cal its first home win of the season. It also kept the Cardinal from capturing the ACC regular-season title and top seed in the ACC Championship, snapping Stanford's 10-game unbeaten streak and five-match shutout streak.
Â
Park tallied the game-winning goal in the 33rd minute, pouncing on an errant clearance to score past goalkeeper Rowan Schnebly for this third goal in three games. The sophomore midfielder, a transfer from San Francisco, posted his first points as a Bear just two games prior with a goal and an assist in a 6-1 rout at Radford on Oct. 22. The Guri-si, South Korea, native scored his second goal for Cal in a 3-2 setback in the next game at Virginia Tech on Oct. 26. Park also earned a penalty kick against the Hokies that was converted by
Malcolm Zalayet.
Â
Pickett, a 6-2 junior central defender, marshaled a backline that stymied a Cardinal team that outshot Cal 14-3 and, with crunching tackles and timely defensive headers, helped goalkeepers
Connor Lambe and
Marco Brougher complete the shutout. Pickett – who also has one assist in 10 games – is another first-year Bear who is excelling at Cal. The Tucson, Arizona, product previously earned two NJCAA Division II First-Team All-America honors at Pima Community College.
Â
Three Bears have now earned ACC Player of the Week honors this year including forward
Luka Lukic, who garnered the accolade in the first week of the season.
Â
Twelfth-seeded Cal next face fifth-seeded Duke in the first round of the ACC Championship on Wednesday at 4 p.m. PT in Durham, North Carolina.
