Bears Defeat Seattle, Shutout LMU In Walk-Off Fashion

CATHEDRAL CITY – The California softball team earned a pair of wins on the third day of the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic after defeating Seattle (4-2) and LMU (8-0) on Saturday at the Big League Dreams Complex in Cathedral City, Calif.

The Golden Bears improved to 9-4 on the season behind stellar pitching and a walk-off by Carly Raven to rule-run the Lions in the second game of the day.

Game 1: Cal – 4 | Seattle – 2

The Bears got going early with base hits by Lagi Quiroga and Elon Butler to open the bottom of the first inning. Kaylee Pond drilled a two-RBI single down the right field line to bring both runners across home plate. In the second inning, Cal added another run on the board, extending the lead to 3-0, as the Redhawks focused on getting a runner out a second.

The Redhawks cut its deficit to one after putting two runs on the board in the top half of the third inning due to a pair of errors by the Bears to give them life. Ryann Orange took the mound in the frame and tallied back-to-back strikeouts to retire the side. Cal added another run in the bottom of the fifth inning due to a sacrifice fly by Kaylee Pond en route to earning the victory.

Orange held the Lions scoreless through 4.2 innings of action, earning three strikeouts and surrendering only one hit.

Game 2: Cal – 8 | LMU – 0

The Bears took a two-run lead after the first inning once again after Acacia Anders blasted a two-RBI double to left field. Cal added more pressure on the Lions after tacking on two more runs in the third inning. Kaylee Pond executed a sacrifice bunt as Elon Butler reached home to extend the lead to 3-0. Later, Anders made it across home plate after Alyssa Herrera grounded out to third base.

Nailyn Marshall made it a five-run game after launching a solo home run to center field, giving the Bears a commanding lead. Cal continued to pull away in the fifth inning when Tianna Bell knocked in an RBI single to give the Bears a 6-0 lead. With the bases loaded, Harmony Andrade forced a walk to tack on the seventh run of the game. Coming in as a pinch hitter and the bases still loaded, Carly Raven notched her first hit of the season to bring the game-winning run across home plate to give the Bears the run-rule walk-off win.

Ryann Orange and Anna Reimers combined to pitch a shutout as Orange earned her third win of the season.
