HARRISONBURG, Va. – The California softball team erupted for 15 runs in the third inning en route to a 16-2 nonconference run-rule victory in five innings at James Madison on Wednesday.
The Golden Bears (25-7) sent 19 players to the plate in the top of the third inning. The 15 runs is tied for the third-most in an inning by any team in the country this season.
Freshman
Mia Phillips rocketed an opposite field three-run home run to right field and fellow freshman
Kayli Counts hit a bases-loaded double to clear the bases, as Cal scored its most runs in a game since a 16-3 win over New Mexico at the Louisiana Classic last February.
Cal had nine hits and four walks in the pivotal third inning while also benefiting from three James Madison errors.
Phillips and
Mika Lee had two hits apiece while freshman
Miranda De Nava threw three innings of one-hit relief for the victory.
Lagi Quiroga,
Tianna Bell and
Harmony Andrade each drove in a pair of runs.
Wednesday marked Cal's ninth run-rule victory of the season.
