SAN JOSE – San Jose State (22-23) scored seven runs in the bottom of the second inning and picked up six more in its half of the fifth on the way to a 14-5 victory over the California baseball team (18-27) in nonconference game at Excite Ballpark on Wednesday evening.
Cal did get a solo homer from
Max Handron in the top of the second to give the Golden Bears a short-lived 1-0 lead and a two-run blast by pinch-hitter
Jack Johnston in the seventh for the team's final two runs.
Jarren Advincula and
PJ Moutzouridis also each drove home a run, while other Cal highlights included
Carl Schmidt's one-out triple in sixth. Eight different Cal players had a hit but none had more than one.
San Jose State also had eight players with at least one hit including five with multiple-hit games and hit four home runs. Zach Chamizo (3-5, 3 R, HR, 2 RBI) and Alex Fernandez (3-5, 2 R, RBI) each had three knocks, while Jared Lewis (2-4, 2 R, 3B, 3 RBI), Antonio Nanez (2-4) and Zach Tallerman (2-5, 2 R, HR, 3 RBI) added two hits each. Three others – Jake McCoy (1-4, R, HR, RBI, BB), Jeriah Lewis (1-5, R, HR, 2 RBI) and Rocco Caballero (1-5, R) – had single hits to give the Spartans a total of 15.
San Jose State used just two pitchers with starter Cade Cushing (6.0 IP, 7 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 1 SO, 1 HBP) picking up his first win of the season and improve to 1-2, while Kyle Calzadiaz (3.0 IP, 1 H, 1 BB, 5 SO, 1 WP) worked the final three innings to get his first save of the campaign.
Cal starter
Gavin Eddy (4.0 IP, 10 H, 10 R, 10 ER, 0 BB, 4 SO) took the loss to fall to 3-4. The Bears used three relievers and got scoreless single innings from
Ryan Spalliero (1.0 IP, 2 SO) and Kaden Tague (1.0 IP, 2 SO), while
David Shaw (2.0 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 2 SO) also worked a pair of frames. Cal's four pitchers combined for 10 strikeouts.
Cal is off for five days before visiting Pacific (18-27) for its final nonconference game of the regular season next Tuesday (6 p.m. PT) at Klein Family Field. A live stream of the contest will be available on ESPN+.
