Matteo Bardana competed in their first of two sessions at the Canadian Championships on Wednesday evening, hoping to match or improve upon their successful outings at Elite Canada this past February in which they won a combined five titles.
Li, who is the reigning Canadian pommel horse champion and NCAA runner-up, leads the field after Day One with a score of 14.366, one of just two men to score over 14.000 (the other being fellow national team member Jayson Rampersad).
Bardana's day started off with a score of 12.166 on pommel horse, followed by a 11.900 on rings and a 12.500 on vault. The second half of his all-around campaign featured a 12.266 on parallel bars, a 11.733 on high bar and a fifth-place 13.566 on floor, the last of which was his strongest event for the Golden Bears as a freshman. His all-around score of 74.131 ranks 12th overall in the competition.
Li and Bardana will have a day of rest before competing in Session II on Friday, with the first rotation beginning at 4:08 p.m. PT.
