Cal Softball Announces Coaching Staff Additions
Gibson Whorton, Corona, Rex-Singleton Join Program
California softball head coach Steve Singleton announced Thursday the addition of three coaches to his staff as he begins his tenure as the leader of the Golden Bears.
"I couldn't be more excited to announce the hiring of Danielle Gibson Whorton, Camille Corona and Chelsea Rex-Singleton," Singleton stated. "The three of them combine to bring a ton of energy, passion, knowledge and experience to the game. We hired three incredible people, and I believe the people you have make the biggest difference. I'm truly excited to see what they'll do here at Cal."
Danielle Gibson Whorton (Hitting Coach)
Gibson Whorton, a two-time all-American and professional softball player, will join the program after spending two seasons at Arkansas as an assistant coach. She helped guide the Razorbacks to an 81-32 overall record with back-to-back NCAA appearances while coaching four NFCA All-Americans, 13 NFCA All-Region honorees and the 2025 USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year. Prior to that, Gibson Whorton spent a season as a volunteer coach at Georgia, where she helped guide the Bulldogs to four All-SEC honors, four NFCA All-Region accolades and two NFCA All-American selections.
As a player, Gibson Whorton is currently playing professionally for the Bandits in the Athletes Unlimited Softball League (ASUL) after being initially selected in the Athletes Unlimited Pro Softball College Draft in the spring of 2022. Collegiately, she had a stellar career at both Arkansas and Arizona State. She appeared in a total of 248 games and totaled a career batting average of .366 with 60 home runs and 220 RBIs. As a Razorback (2019-22), Gibson Whorton led the program to back-to-back regular season SEC championships (2021 & 2022), including the SEC Tournament title in 2022. Overall, she earned a slew of honors throughout her career, including an NFCA Freshman of the Year finalist, two NFCA All-American accolades, four NFCA All-Region honors, six all-conference selections, and a finalist for both the Honda Sport Award and the USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year Top 10 Finalist.
Camille Corona (Assistant Coach)
Corona joins the Bears after a one-year stint at Florida Southwestern as an assistant coach during the 2024 season. During her tenure, she aided the Bucs to a 56-7 overall record, while securing their ninth straight conference championship, the fourth FCSAA title in program history, a runner-up finish in the NJCAA National Championship game, and a pair of NJCAA All-Americans. She served as the head coach for the Texas Bluebonnets of the Lone Star State Summer Collegiate Softball League in Texas.
Before her collegiate coaching career, Corona spent four years at Texas (2020-23) as a student-athlete, then transferred to Texas-Arlington for her fifth year in 2024. During her playing career, she accumulated a .407 career batting average with three NCAA postseason appearances. In her lone season with the Mavericks, she earned first-team All-WAC and All-WAC Defensive Team honors, along with an NFCA Third-Team All-Region selection after leading the team in several statistical categories: hits (67), runs scored (31), on-base percentage (.463), sacrifice hits (5) and stolen bases (9).
Chelsea Rex-Singleton (Pitching Coach)
Rex-Singleton brings a wealth of knowledge to Cal after spending the past two years as an assistant coach for Southwestern. During her tenure, she guided several Pirates to four all-conference honors, along with 12 honorable mentions. She also spent six years at Redlands, beginning as a graduate assistant in 2016, while earning a master's degree in higher education, before being elevated to an assistant coach in 2019. With the Bulldog, she helped lead the program to a SCIAC tournament title in 2021 and an SCIAC regular season championship in 2022. Rex-Singleton was a part of the back-to-back SCIAC Coaching Staff of the Year (2021-22) under head coach Jose Ortega.
As a student-athlete, Rex-Singleton earned a bachelor's degree in both psychology and early childhood education in 2015. On the field, she split time in the circle and at third base. As a pitcher, she appeared in 53 games (35 starts) and recorded a 4.13 career ERA with 153 strikeouts, 22 complete games and 12 wins in 239 innings pitched. Offensively, Rex-Singleton accumulated a .227 batting average with 52 hits, 40 RBIs, 24 runs and seven home runs.
