4 Move On To NFL’s Divisional Playoffs Round
Hawkins, Hicks, Tonges, Woodson Win Wild Card Weekend Games
Four former Cal football players - Elijah Hicks (Chicago), Jaylinn Hawkins (New England), Jake Tonges (San Francisco) and
Craig Woodson (New England) - were on active rosters of winning teams during the NFL's Wild Card Weekend and have moved on to Divisional Playoffs Round this Saturday-Sunday.
Hicks was the first to advance last Saturday when Chicago rallied from a 21-3 second-half deficit to defeat Green Bay 31-27. The Bears headed into the fourth quarter down 21-6 but outscored the Packers 25-6 over the final 15 minutes. Hicks had one tackle and one forced fumble while seeing action in 26 plays (5 defense, 21 special teams).
Tonges became the second Golden Bear to advance when San Francisco also came from behind in the final period in a 23-19 road win at Philadelphia. Tonges had one reception for 14 yards while playing in the most offensive plays (43) of any of the team's tight ends after starter George Kittle suffered a season-ending injury in the second period.
Hawkins and Woodson became the final Bears to move on after New England's starting safety duo helped the Patriots to a 16-3 home win over the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday Night Football. Woodson had a game-high 11 tackles and one tackle for loss in his first career playoff game, while Hawkins added three stops.
In addition to Cal's four former players on active rosters, Davis Webb is the offensive pass game coordinator and quarterbacks coach for AFC top-seed Denver. The Broncos open their playoff schedule by hosting No. 5 AFC seed Buffalo in the first Divisional playoff game on Saturday (1:30 pm PT, CBS), while Tonges and the No. 6 NFC-seeded 49ers visit No. 1 NFC seed Seattle in the opening day's nightcap (5 pm, FOX).
Hawkins and Woodson's No. 2 AFC seed New England starts Sunday's action by hosting No. 5 Houston (12 pm, ESPN), while Hicks and the No. 2 NFC-seeded Bears welcome the No. 5 Los Angeles Rams to Soldier Field in Sunday's Divisional Round finale (3:30 pm).
