Twidale’s Career Day Powers Cal Past Boston College

Twidale Scores 36 Points, Eight 3-Pointers

Behind a career performance from Lulu Twidale in which she poured in 36 points with eight 3-pointers, the California women's basketball team handled Boston College with a 73-58 win at Conte Forum in Chestnut Hill on Sunday afternoon. The 36 points were the most by a Golden Bear since Kristine Anigwe scored 37 against Houston on Nov. 6, 2018 and the eight triples were the second most in a single game in program history after Asha Thomas drilled nine against Manhattan on Nov. 24, 2017. The Golden Bears (11-9, 2-5 ACC) hit 14 triples – their most in a game this season and won their second straight game over the Eagles (4-17, 0-8).

In addition to her scoring, Twidale also dished out nine assists for a game high, while Gisella Maul had career-highs of 17 points and five 3-pointers to go along with 10 rebounds for her third double-double of the season.

Twidale scored eight early points including two 3-pointers to power a 13-0 run for Cal to start the game. Boston College didn't score its first point until a layup at the 4:06 mark. That sparked a 6-0 Eagles' run before Maul ended it with a corner triple that put Cal up 16-6 with 2:43 to go. Twidale dished out five assists in the quarter and Cal took a 21-10 lead into the second quarter.

The Eagles used a 9-0 run to get within 23-19 midway through the second quarter before Mjracle Sheppard drove the lane for a layup to end it at the 5:52 mark. The Bears responded by holding Boston College scoreless for the next four minutes and Twidale's third triple of the game regained momentum for Cal and put the Bears up 28-21 with three minutes to go in the half. The Eagles finished just 1-of-8 from the field to end the quarter and the Bears took a 30-23 lead into the break.

In the third quarter, Twidale stole the ball and took it the other way for a layup to help the Bears open the quarter on a 7-3 run and put them up 37-26 with six minutes remaining. Later Maul found Taylor Barnes at the hoop for a layup to extend Cal's run. Twidale's fourth 3-pointer of the game put Cal up 42-28 with 4:12 to go. The Eagles, however, ended the quarter on a 7-2 run to cut the deficit to 48-41 going into the final frame.

Twidale found Maul for back-to-back 3-pointers to open the fourth quarter and extend Cal's lead to 54-43. Twidale would nail her fifth triple of the game on the Bears' next possession and her seventh 3-pointer of the game gave Cal its biggest lead at 68-45 with 4:14 left in the game to help the Bears coast to the victory.

"It's always great when she [Lulu Twidale] knocks down shots," Cal head coach Charmin Smith said. "We're really confident in her shooting. We want her to shoot every time she's open. I like the fact that she had nine assists. I think she was looking for people to make plays, to get other people shots, and was really intentional and focused on being a play maker in that way for us, and that's really important."

Boston College was led by Lily Carmody's 17 points.
