Underhill Picks Up Second Weekly Honor

Rookie Gymnast Named MPSF Freshman Of The Week

California men's gymnastics standout Nathan Underhill picked up his second freshman award of the season Tuesday as he was named the MPSF Freshman of the Week, as announced by the conference. Underhill, who competed in his first collegiate all-around at the Stanford Open last Saturday, previously won Co-Rookie of the Week honors from the College Gymnastics Association (CGA) after the Golden Bears' season opener earlier this month.

Cal posted a nation-best 56.650 on vault over the weekend, with Underhill recording a PR of 14.100 as the Bears' third man up. He also smashed his previous season best on rings with an exhibition score of 13.250 and also competed in the main floor and parallel bars lineups, respectively posting scores of 12.800 and 12.300.

This is Cal's first MPSF Freshman of the Week honor since Matteo Bardana was honored on Feb. 27, 2025. Underhill is the sixth Cal gymnast to receive the award since its inception, joining teammates Theodor Roald Gadderud (twice in 2023), Carter Kim (2024), Brendan Strom (2024), Jaxon Mitchell (2024) and Bardana.

Underhill and the Bears will compete next at a tri-meet with Greenville and Simpson in Greenville, Illinois, on Feb. 7.
