Cal Drops Series Opener At UC Irvine 5-3

Bears’ Late-Inning Comeback Falls Short

IRVINE— The California baseball team's late-inning comeback bid fell short Friday night as the Golden Bears dropped their road series opener against UC Irvine 5-3 at Anteater Ballpark in Irvine.

With the win the undefeated Anteaters improved to 4-0 while the Golden Bears fell to 2-3.

Cal right-hander Oliver de la Torre (0-2) earned his second straight Friday start and suffered his second straight loss despite giving up just two runs in four innings of work while striking out four. The junior retired all nine batters the first time through the order but then allowed four hits in the fourth inning.

The Bears were only outhit 9-7 but didn't register any walks and were shutout through the first seven innings of the ballgame thanks to quality start from UCI's Trevor Hansen. The Anteater pitcher went 8.1 innings and entered the game having not allowed a run yet this season.

Cal got to Hansen in the top of the eighth as first baseman Gannon Snyder, who made his first start for the Bears, collected a bases-loaded sac-fly to right field. Catcher Hideki Prather followed with an RBI single to cut the lead to 5-2 before being caught trying to extend it to a double to end the inning.

UCI threatened to extend its lead in the bottom half of the inning getting two on with no outs, but freshman Cade Colombara entered and got Cal out of the jam retiring three straight batters on ground balls.

In the top of ninth with one out, designated-hitter Daniel Murillo posted the first triple of the season which cued Hansen's exit. Centerfielder Joshua Hanson picked the perfect time to collect his first collegiate hit and RBI, roping a hustle double to the gap in right-center field to make it a 5-3 ballgame, but the next two Bears went down in order to end the night.

Prather, who hit in the lead-off spot for the first time this year went 2-for-4 and five other Bears collected a single hit.

Cal pitcher Quinn Larson had a much-improved outing from his Opening Day appearance tossing 2.1 innings with zero earned runs and five strikeouts.

Cal is back at Anteater Ballpark for game two of the series tomorrow at 1 p.m. on ESPN+.
