Ali Sahaida posted the best mark by a Cal female pole vaulter, indoors or outdoors, at the New Mexico Collegiate Classic.
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The California track & field team posted another impressive outing at the Albuquerque Convention Center on Friday, returning for their second of two meets at the venue with a hunger for more top-10 marks and personal bests at the New Mexico Collegiate Classic. On that front, the Golden Bears more than delivered, totaling five new program all-time top 10s and 12 career marks.
Of all of Cal's outstanding performances, none stood out more than the outing from senior
Ali Sahaida, who posted a jaw-dropping eight-inch PR of 4.49m (14-8.75) and struck down the program's eight-year-old record set by alumnae Lauren Martinez. Sahaida cleared her first three bars in one try each before surpassing 4.39m (14-4.75) to clinch the Bears' all-time mark. She then followed up with a clearance of 4.44m (14-6.76) on her second attempt for the best mark ever reached by a female Bear indoors or outdoors, then bettered that to the final winning height on her third jump to clinch her third straight event title as well as a new facility record.
The men's weight throw was once again a red-hot event for the Bears, with freshman superstar
Pietro Camilli crushing Cal's freshman record for the third consecutive meet with a third-place heave of 20.44m (67-0.75) that surpassed his previous best by a foot and a half and moved him up to No. 2 in program history. Redshirt freshman
Miles Clark, who posted Cal's No. 10 all-time performance two weeks ago, moved up one spot in the program rankings with a mark of 19.49m (63-11.5), which was also more than a foot over his career best.
Sophomore
Nairobi Smith posted a heat-winning time of 23.81 in the 200m unseeded race, moving into a tie with alumnae Antonette Carter for the No. 2 time in program history and trailing only former teammate and alumnae Aysha Shaheed's 2025 time of 23.49. Junior
Adrianna Coleman won her third consecutive weight throw title and crossed the 20-meter barrier for the first time in her career, adding over two-and-a-half feet to her PR with a throw of 20.60m (67-7) to become the No. 6 performer in program history.
Redshirt juniors
Seth Johnson and
Luke Buddie competed in their first heptathlons of the season, respectively ending the day in second place (3134 points) and fourth place (3072 points) after the first four events. Johnson's morning started out with a comfortable win in the 60m, posting a time of 6.88 to lead the field by .17 seconds and come within 0.01 second of his own career best. He tied for second place in the long jump with Buddie as each man posted a mark of 1.99m (6-6.25); for Buddie, that height was a four-inch personal best and his third career mark of the day, following a leap of 7.04m (23-1.25) in the long jump and a throw of 13.05m (42-9.75) in the shot put.
Junior
Javon Hampton Jr. improved his indoor best in the long jump to 7.42m (24-4.25), while freshman
Avery Hart added over two feet to her previous best with a mark of 5.76m (18-10.75) in the same event and fellow rookie
Kai Anderson reached a new PR of 5.15m (16-10.75) in the pole vault B section, which was also good for one place above redshirt junior
Will Siemens' third-place 4.95m/16-2.75. Other Bears who recorded season bests were sophomore
Paige Porter (200m, 25.01), junior
Victor Ezike Jr. (high jump, 2.03m/6-8), graduate student
Grace Reinhardt (high jump, 1.60m/5-3), junior
Chukwunonso Udeh (long jump, 7.08m/23-2.75) and junior
Angie Schykerynec (weight throw, 18.85m/61-10.25).
Rookie
Anya Patel made her collegiate debut in the women's pole vault B section, posting a mark of 3.55m (11-7.75). Redshirt junior vaulter
David Brok made his indoor debut with a mark of 4.65m (15-3) in the men's B section.
