FULLERTON – Sophomore Layna Gerhard threw the California softball team's first no-hitter in eight years and the Golden Bears also produced an offensive explosion to close out the Judi Garman Classic with a 16-0 run-rule victory in five innings over East Texas A&M on Sunday.
Gerhard, in her first season with the Bears after transferring from Ohio State, struck out three and walked three to become the first Cal pitcher to toss a no-no since Kamalani Dung threw a perfect game against UTEP in a 4-0 victory in 2018.
The Bears wasted no time setting the tone, erupting for six runs in the first inning. Kyndal Todd opened the scoring with a two-run single before freshman Sophia Everett launched the first home run of her collegiate career, a three-run shot that pushed the lead to 5-0. Natalie Marshall added an RBI single to cap the frame.
Everett stayed hot in the second, roping a two-run double to left-center to extend the advantage to 8-0.
Cal continued to pour it on in the third, plating four more runs. Carly Raven doubled to right-center to drive in two, Anya German added an RBI single, and Everett recorded her third extra-base hit of the game with another RBI knock to make it 12-0.
The Bears put the finishing touches on the victory in the fourth. German crushed a two-run homer to deep left, and Gator Robinson crossed the plate as Cal stretched its lead to 16-0, securing the run-rule win.
Cal (8-14) returns to action next weekend to open conference play against Duke in Sacramento.
