BERKELEY— The California baseball team dropped its ACC home opener Friday night falling to No. 15 North Carolina 8-1 at Stu Gordon Stadium.
With their second straight loss the Golden Bears fell to 13-5 with an 0-1 conference record while the Tar Heels improved to 15-3-1 overall and evened out their ACC record at 2-2.
Cal collected three hits in the first two innings but couldn't find much after that despite seeing a high number of hard-hit balls. UNC's outfield made several remarkable plays throughout the night. The Bears were a foot away from scoring the first run of the series in the first inning but were thrown out at the plate trying to score on a sac-fly.
The Tar Heels struck first in the top of the fifth scoring a single run but broke the game wide open in the next inning. Cal was a couple of pitches away from getting out of a jam but an error, two walks and a hit batter led to UNC taking a 5-0 lead.
Cal starter
Oliver de la Torre had a solid outing until that sixth inning, retiring the first nine batters he saw and facing the minimum through the first four innings. He was charged with the loss allowing four earned runs in 5.1 innings of work while striking out five.
Cade Campbell got the Bears on the board in the bottom of the sixth inning, crushing his fourth home run of the season, but the Tar Heels answered right back with a solo shot of their own in the next half inning to extend the lead to 6-1.
Quinn Larson was excellent out of the pen for Cal tossing 2.2 innings of one-hit, one-run ball. On the offensive side the Bears' middle-infielders both registered multi-hit games with second baseman
Jacob French going 2-for-3 with an HBP and shortstop
Jett Kenady going 2-for-4.
North Carolina ended the night with a pair of runs in the top of ninth to make the final score 8-1.
The Bears will look to even the series tomorrow in game two. First pitch is set for 2:05 p.m. on ACCNX.
