Bears Drop Heartbreaker To BC In Beantown

Eagles Close Out 3-Game Sweep Of Cal With 3-2 Win In 11 Innings

BOSTON - The California baseball team had chances to win but was also able to extend the game to 11 innings by getting out of some jams on before eventually falling 4-3  to Boston College on Sunday in the finale of a three-game Atlantic Coast Conference series at Brighton Baseball Field.

The Eagles scored the game-winning run without a hit in the bottom of the 11th. Carter Hendrickson drew a leadoff walk and his pinch-runner Owen DeShazo ended up on third base with no outs after the next play when Cal reliever and losing pitcher Cade Colombara (0-1) threw the ball into center field trying to throw DeShazo out at second base on Gunnar Johnson's sacrifice bunt. Jordan Lopez relieved Colombara on the mound and allowed the game-winning sacrifice fly to Kyle Wolff.

The run by the Eagles in the bottom of the 11th inning was the first time either team had scored since Cal tied the game at 2-2 with an unearned run in the top of the sixth in a contest that was seemingly more about missed opportunities than anything else.
Cal had arguably its best chance to take the lead late in the game in the eighth when Hideki Prather was thrown out on a bang-bang play at the plate trying to score on Jett Kenady's fly ball to left field.

The Bears also had solid chances to score in both the 10th and 11th innings but left a pair of runners stranded in each.

Boston College's game-winning run in the bottom of the 11th was its first since taking a 2-1 lead in the fourth.

The Eagles had the bases loaded with one out and the game tied 2-2 in the bottom of the eighth but Cal reliever Quinn Larson got the Bears out of the jam with back-to-back strikeouts of Luke Gallo and Hendrickson.

In the bottom of the ninth, it was Cal's turn to throw a runner out at the plate with Gannon Snyder gunning down Colin Larson while trying to score the game-winner on Ty Mainolfi's fly ball to the Golden Bears' right fielder.

Snyder then threw out his second baserunner in as many innings in the bottom of the 10th when Jack Toomey rounded second base too far and Gannon threw behind him before he could get back to the base safely.

A combination of small ball and defensive miscues played a role in all five runs that were scored on a cold morning on the third day of spring in Boston.

The Eagles had successful sacrifice bunts to help them plate their runs in all three frames, while the Bears used a sacrifice bunt, a sacrifice fly and took advantage of a Boston College error to score their second-inning run and a two-out fielding error to plate their sixth-inning score.

The Eagles outhit the Bears, 10-6. BC stranded 10 while the Bears left eight on base.

Danny Surowiec (2-4), Nick Wang (2-4) and Julio Solier (2-5) picked up two hits apiece for Boston College, while Kenady (2-5, 2 2B) and Murillo (2-5) had two-hit games for the Bears.

Both starters were effective in no-decision outings with Cal's Gavin Eddy throwing a season-high-tying 7.0 innings (7 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 5 SO) and Boston College's Brady Miller going a season-best 6.0 frames (3 H, 2 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 7 SO) without allowing an earned run. Eagles relievers Chase Hartsell (2.0 IP, 1 BB, 1 SO, 1 WP) and John Kwiatkowski (3.0 IP, 3 H) were also effective with the latter being credited with the win to run his record to 3-0.

Sunday's defeat was the second one-run loss in the series for the Bears (13-11, 0-6 ACC), who were edged 4-3 in Friday's series opener and defeated 9-6 on Saturday.

Cal returns to action with a three-game ACC series next Friday-Sunday at No. 24 Wake Forest (17-6, 4-4 ACC). Broadcasts of all three contests (3 pm, 1 pm, 10 am PT) can be watched on ACCNX.ESPN+.
