Cal Run-Rules San Diego 11-1

Bears Walk It Off For 8th Straight Win

BERKELEY— The California baseball team earned a walk-off, run-rule win Friday night to open its series with San Diego at Stu Gordon Stadium in Berkeley. After posting 15 runs on 21 hits on Wednesday, the Golden Bears scored 11 runs on 15 hits in eight innings to defeat the Toreros 11-1 for their eighth straight win.

With its fourth walk-off of the year Cal improves to 10-3 while USD dropped its third straight to fall to 7-5.

Junior right hander Oliver de la Torre earned his first win of the season by tossing six full innings of one-run ball. He scattered five hits and a walk while striking out a career-high nine batters.

The Toreros scored the first run of the series in the top of the second inning on a sac-fly but it would be their only run of the night as the Bears scored 11 unanswered.

Right fielder Gannon Snyder tied the game in the bottom half of the inning with an RBI double and catcher Hideki Prather put his team up for good in the third with his team-leading fourth home run of the year. Prather would end the night 3-for-5 with three runs.
Cal hung a four-spot in the fourth and another in the sixth thanks in part to a pair of two-run homers by shortstop Jett Kenady and third baseman Cade Campbell, who extended his hit streak to 13 games with his blast.

In the bottom of the eighth second baseman Jacob French got aboard with a single and moved into scoring position on a wild pitch with his team up 10-1. Next up was Campbell who blooped a walk-off single to left field to end the game.

French posted his second straight four-hit effort going 4-for-5 with a double, two runs, and two RBI.

Relief pitcher Quinn Larson was on his way to a nine-out save before the walk-off interrupted his stellar performance where he tossed two scoreless, hitless innings with three punchouts.

The series continues tomorrow with a doubleheader at 1 p.m. on ACCNX. Senior Ethan Foley is expected to throw game one for Cal against USD lefty Kyle Bade. Game two of the doubleheader will start approximately 45 minutes after the completion of game one.
