Bears Sweep Doubleheader To Win Series

Cal On Longest Win Streak In 10 Years

BERKELEY— The California baseball team swept its Saturday doubleheader with San Diego to win the series and extend its win streak to 10 straight games, a feat that had not been accomplished since 2016. The Golden Bears downed the Toreros 15-9 in game one and sealed the series with a 9-1 victory in game two at Stu Gordon Stadium in Berkeley.

With just two more games to go before the ACC slate begins, Cal boasts a 12-3 record that matches its start from 2024. The Toreros dropped their fifth straight to fall even at 7-7.

In the series thus far, the Bears have recorded 45 hits, 24 of which have gone for extra bases including nine home runs, and have a run differential of 35-11. Cal is hitting .413 while holding San Diego to a .215 team batting average and has a 2.08 team ERA compared to the Toreros' 12.93.

The Bears' torrid offensive run this week, including its 15-6 win over CSU Bakersfield on Wednesday, gives them 50 runs in four games, which is the most in any four-game stretch since 2022.

GAME ONE
Cal began game one of the doubleheader in a 4-0 hole after San Diego started the day by scoring four unearned runs before the Bears ever came in to bat.

Slowly but surely the Bears' offense began to chip away first with two sac-flies from Daniel Murillo and Cade Campbell in the bottom half of the first to cut the lead in half. USD bolstered its lead in the top of the second with another pair of runs, this time earned, but once again Cal was there to keep it close with an RBI double by Gannon Snyder and a sac-fly from Jacob French to cut the lead to 6-4.

Cal used small ball to start the game but won the game with loud contact hanging a three-spot in the fifth inning and five more runs on seven extra-base hits to take a 12-7 lead. Freshman Kevin Jeon hit the first two home runs of his career and did so in back-to-back at bats on his way to a 3-for-3 performance with three RBI and a walk. Fellow freshman Joshua Hanson collected a pair of RBI in the two-inning period as well posting a single and a double.

Ethan Foley earned the start and had a solid outing going 5.2 innings and allowing just three earned runs with three strikeouts. Take Kreis earned his first career win tossing 2.2 innings in relief. The freshman allowed one earned while fanning a pair of batters.

GAME TWO
The bats stayed hot in game two of the afternoon with the Bears jumping out to a 5-0 lead in the bottom of the first thanks to Murillo's third home run of the year and an RBI by Hanson and Snyder, but the real story came from the mound.

Freshman phenom Otto Espinoza took the bump for his first collegiate start and did not disappoint tossing a career-high seven innings with 10 strikeouts, the most by any Bear this season. After allowing a solo home run in the second inning the Huntington Beach product settled in and hung five straight zeros on the scoreboard scattering three hits and two walks and stranding all four of those Toreros on the basepaths.

Insurance came in the bottom of the eighth with Carl Schmidt hitting a lead-off home run followed by back-to-back RBI doubles for both Lawson Olmstead and Hideki Prather.

Senior closer Cole Clark finished the game tossing two scoreless, hitless innings with four punchouts.

Freshman Jett Kenady was tremendous through both games going 6-for-9 on the day with two doubles, a triple, a home run, and four runs scored. Cade Campbell collected a single hit in both games to keep his 15-game hit streak alive.
