BERKELEY - The California lacrosse team (3-5, 1-3 ACC) stayed within striking distance of No. 10 Boston College (3-4, 3-2 ACC) until late in the third period of an Atlantic Coast Conference game on a gorgeous Saturday afternoon at California Memorial Stadium before an eventual 15-8 loss.
The Bears trailed 6-4 at halftime and were still down only 7-5 late in the third period until the Eagles' four-goal run over a stretch of three minutes and 26 seconds late in the third period and early in fourth. Hanna Davis started the Eagles' scoring flurry when she found the back of the net on an assist from Avery Hudson with 2:56 to go in the third. By the end of the period, Cal would trail 10-5 after Giulia Colarusso and Caroline Chisholm followed with goals on assists from Molly Driscoll and Kylee Colbert. Hudson then picked up her second goal of the contest on the Eagles' first possession of the fourth period on an assist from Casey Colbert.
The Bears would never get closer than five the rest of the way.
The trio of Hudson, Colarusso and Davis were the game's standouts with Hudson registering a game-high six points on two goals and four assists, Colarusso posting a game-high four goals and one assist for five points, and Davis picking up four points on two goals and two assists. Driscoll added two points on a goal and an assist, while six others (Shea Baker, Chisholm, Kaitlyn Cole, Lily Kondas, Brooke McLoy, Marissa White) had one goal apiece. Kylee Colbert added a pair of assists, while Casey Colbert picked up one.
Eight different Cal players -
Katie Bloomer,
Willow Cyr, Julia Doran,
Avery Hoeft,
Alina Hsu,
Katie McMullen,
Emily Moes and
Maddie Willkomm - scored a single goal for the Bears. Doran's goal was the first of her collegiate career, while the goals for Cyr and Hsu were their firsts of the season. Cyr, Doran and Willkomm's goals came on free-position shots as Cal made a season-high three of its six attempts. Hoeft added two of Cal's three assists, while
Courtney Wong also picked up one.
Cal continues a season-long four-game homestand and looks to end a season-long four-game losing skid on Monday with a nonconference contest against Stonehill (3-4, 0-0 NEC). First draw is at 3 pm PT and the game will be streamed live on ACCNX/ESPN+.
