Bears Score 9 Goals In 4th, Beat Stonehill 17-10

10 Different Cal Players Score In Victory

BERKELEY - The California lacrosse team (4-5) scored a season-high 17 goals and also its most goals this season in a single period with nine in the fourth in a 17-10 victory over Stonehill (3-5) in a nonconference game Monday afternoon at California Memorial Stadium.

The Golden Bears had 10 different players score goals and 12 pick up points in the contest. Emily Moes had a season-high-tying four goals and five points, while Ashleigh Masterson posted a career-high-tying three goals, and Avery Hoeft added season highs of four assists and five points to lead the way. Katie Bloomer and Alina Hsu added two goals apiece, while five others - Juliana Doran, Josie Lillquist, Katie McMullen, Dahlen Vilbrandt and Courtney Wong - had one goal each. Lillquist added two assists and Vilbrandt one, while Jane Middleton and Brynn Gallagher also each had an assist as the Bears had 10 as a team.

Four of Cal's goals were on free position attempts as the Bears' connected on a season-high four.

In addition, Courtney Wong posted a career-high and team season-high 12 draw controls to help the Bears to a 20-9 advantage overall.

"It was such a great collective effort," Masterson said. "Everybody was working together, especially on attack, sitting picks for each other and reading each other well."

"We're definitely excited that this [offensive showing] happened for us," Moes said. "But we talked about what we needed to do going into the fourth quarter, executed on all fronts, and everybody did their job. That kind of thing can happen a lot more frequently, and now we know that as a team."

Cal's victory came in the first-ever meeting between the teams and snapped the Bears' season-long four-game losing streak.

Cal scored the game's first three goals but never extended its lead beyond three goals until its fourth-quarter run. 

Stonehill never led in the contest but the Seahawks did pull into a tie on three different occasions and for the final time at 8-8 with 13:22 to go in the fourth period on a Taylor Green goal with an assist from Val Beigel.

But Cal responded by quickly scoring the game's next four goals in a span of just over three minutes to reestablish control and go in front 12-8 for its biggest lead of the contest at that point. Moes scored her fourth and final goal with 12:41 to go to start the run and was followed by Masterson (11:31) and Hsu (10:23) with unassisted goals before McMullen finished the run on an assist from Hoeft with 9:32 remaining.

Later in the fourth, Cal scored five consecutive goals, starting with back-to-back Bloomer tallies on assists from Hoeft on both with 6:34 and 5:39 remaining in the contest. Hsu then scored on a free position shot with 4:02 remaining, Hoeft on assist from Gallagher with 2:08 on the clock and Doran on an assist from Vilbrandt only 20 seconds later.

Grace Murphy and Natalie Coutu each had a hat trick for Stonehill with Coutu also picking up an assist. Green, Sophia Gouveia, Abby Hanifin and Jennaveve Koch accounted for the Skyhawks' other four goals with one apiece. 

Cal continues its season-long four-game homestand on Thursday with the Bears' third contest of the homestand against the nation's top-ranked team North Carolina (7-0, 5-0 ACC) in an Atlantic Coast Conference game. First draw is at 4 pm PT and the contest can be watched live on ACCNX/ESPN+.
