BERKELEY — For the first time in program history the California baseball team won back-to-back ACC series as the Golden Bears defeated Louisville 6-5 Saturday at Stu Gordon Stadium. First baseman
Daniel Murillo homered twice and starting pitcher
Gavin Eddy threw an eight-inning gem to give Cal its fifth straight conference win and 20th victory of the season.
Just like yesterday the Bears (20-17, 6-11) had to come from behind to defeat the Cardinals (21-18, 6-11) who took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning.
Cal got on the board in the bottom of third with
Hideki Prather singling to shallow left field and scoring on a two-out bloop RBI double by
Jett Kenady who went 3-for-4 with two runs scored in the game. On the very next pitch Murillo crushed his third home run in his last four games to put the Bears on top 3-1.
That lead was short-lived as the Cardinals answered with a three-spot of their own in the top of the fifth to retake the lead 4-3, but that lead was short lived as Murillo went deep again in the bottom half. His team-leading ninth home run of the year was another two-run shot to put the Bears up 5-4.
Cal got a key insurance run in the seventh with Kennedy singling and scoring on a wild pitch after being moved over to third on a single by Murillo who collected his third hit of the game.
Eddy (6-2) wrapped up yet another incredible start by allowing just one baserunner to reach after his team took the lead in the fifth inning. He ended with 8.0 innings of work and allowed just three earned on seven hits and a walk while striking out seven in the win.
After picking up his first career save last night,
Ethan Foley entered the ninth in a save situation today and the senior came through once again allowing a run but shutting the door to seal the series for Cal.
The Bears will look for their second straight ACC sweep in tomorrow's Bark at the Park game presented by Nylabone and Cadet. First pitch is set for 1:05 p.m. on ACCNX.
