CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – Nine members of the California men's gymnastics team closed out their season in front of a raucous crowd at State Farm Arena on Saturday, rotating as individuals with the six qualifying squads – Stanford, Michigan, Oklahoma, Nebraska, Ohio State and Illinois – each vying for a national title at the NCAA Championships Final. At the end of the night, it was Stanford who won the team competition with a score of 329.825, followed by Oklahoma (328.495) and Michigan (324.857).

A pair of seniors – Khalen Curry and Jasper Smith-Gordon – closed out their collegiate careers with top-10 finishes. Curry, the first man of the evening to compete, executed his best floor routine of the year and ended with a stuck dismount to earn a 10th-place score of 13.833, the highest finish by a Golden Bear since alumnus Kyte Crigger tied for fifth place in 2018. Smith-Gordon finished in the top 10 on both pommel horse (13.566) and vault (14.066) in his first multi-event NCAA Final appearance.

Junior Harry Kim posted a score of 13.366 on pommel horse in his first NCAA Final, while freshman Nathan Underhill made his own Day 2 debut with a 13.033 on rings. Sophomore Matteo Bardana joined Underhill on rings and posted a season-best 13.266.

Bardana (13.366) and senior Theodor Roald Gadderud (12.233) rounded out Cal's three-man group of qualifiers on floor, while graduate student Kaien Orion finished his year with a score of 11.933 on parallel bars.

Competing in his second NCAA Final and his first on high bar, junior Jaxon Mitchell closed out his season with a score of 12.900. The last man up for Cal was year-mate and Champaign native Tucker Yasunaga, who saved his routine of 11.700 with a stuck dismount – his third in two days.

"I feel such a sense of pride in this team and what they were able to accomplish this season," said assistant coach Donothan Bailey. "This is a resilient bunch, and I'm consistently impressed by their ability to adapt and thrive throughout all the adversity they faced this year. I will always respect the courage and vulnerability it takes to step onto the gymnastics floor and put it all on the line. Having nine out of 12 NCAA Championships competitors in the final is a big accomplishment, and it's really highlighted the progress that we've made this year as well as the potential we have for next year."

The Bears finished the year with a No. 7 national ranking.

"We came into this season believing we were a team capable of qualifying to Day 2 and competing with the best, and we still believe that," Bailey said. "I'm so thankful for the hard work and dedication that these guys have given to our cause and to this team. There's so much to be grateful for - so many program records and a seventh-place finish to cap it all off. The guys are hungrier than ever to prove themselves next year and are already taking the initiative to be here over the summer and hold each other accountable. There's going to be a lot of Blue & Gold on that podium next year."
