BERKELEY.— The California baseball team was run-ruled by No. 3 Georgia Tech 17-2 in its series opener Thursday night at Stu Gordon Stadium in Berkeley.
The Yellow Jackets (24-5, 10-3) led off the game with a nine-run first inning collecting six hits and capitalizing on two Golden Bear errors to bat around before an out was recorded. GT added eight more over the next four innings to go up 17-0.
Cal (14-14, 1-9) was short-handed offensively once again missing two of its top bats in
Hideki Prather and
Jacob French due to injury and those absences were felt with the Bears getting just three hits through the first four innings.
The Bears avoided their first shutout of the year with freshman shortstop
Jett Kenady slapping an RBI single through the right side of the infield to beat the shift. First baseman
Daniel Murillo brought one in on a single of his own for his team-leading 23rd RBI of the year to make it 17-2.
After Cal got on the board, freshman
Jett Wright took the mound and hung a zero in the sixth recording a pair of strikeouts to retire the Yellow Jackets in order. Junior
JJ Hollis followed with a 1-2-3 of his own in the seventh.
Seven different arms were featured by the Bears who issued 10 walks and gave up 11 hits. This was Cal's largest margin of defeat and the first time it had been run-ruled since a 13-2 loss to Santa Clara in the season opener.
The Bears and Jackets are back at The Stu for game two tomorrow at 6:05 p.m. PT on ACCNX.
