BERKELEY -
Carrie Johnson, a senior with the California track and field team, is this week's Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of the Week. She is the second straight track athlete to earn the honor.
Johnson posted a lifetime-best and NCAA regional-qualifying mark of 211 feet, five inches (63.43 meters) to win the women's hammer throw at the Stanford Invitational last Saturday. That mark places her second on Cal's all-time top-10 list for the women's hammer.
In Trackwire's latest women's Dandy Dozen, which ranks the top athletes in each event, six Golden Bears are listed. Johnson is ranked No. 5 in the hammer throw.
A classical civilizations major, Johnson speaks Spanish, Italian German and Modern Greek and is studying Arabic and French. She has toured with Athletes in Action.
As a junior in 2006, she recorded a then lifetime-best and Cal season-best mark 63.47 meters (208-3) in the hammer throw at the Pac-10 Championships. Her shot put of 12.82 (42-00.75) at the Big Meet was a lifetime-best mark. She had a lifetime-best discus throw of 44.52 (146-1) in the Brutus Hamilton Invitational. Johnson notched a lifetime-best and Cal indoor-record weight throw of 18.40 (60-4.5) at the MPSF Indoor Championships. She was named honorable mention Pac-10 All-Academic.
This weekend, the Golden Bears, ranked 13th in the nation, battle Stanford in the 113th annual Big Meet on Saturday.
