HEAD COACH DAVID ESQUER: Esquer, 50, is in his 16th season with a career record of 454-407-2 (.527). After his team was scheduled to be discontinued following the 2011 season, Esquer led the Bears to the program’s first appearance at the College World Series since 1992, and on the eve of Cal’s 7-3 CWS victory over Texas A&M June 21, 2011, was named the National Coach of the Year by the National College Baseball Writers Association. Esquer’s award, which was voted on by the NCBWA Board of Directors, was selected from a list that included all Division I Conference Coaches of the Year and the coaches of the 16 NCAA Super Regional teams. The Bears’ program was reinstated through fund-raising efforts and made its sixth all-time appearance in the CWS. Esquer led Cal out of the loser’s bracket in the Houston Regional and defeated Dallas Baptist in the Super Regional to advance to Omaha. Cal entered the 2011 NCAA Tournament with an at-large bid out of the Pac-10. After a 6-4 loss to Baylor in the opening game, Esquer’s team got past Alcorn State, 10-6, and No. 13 Rice, 6-3, to face Baylor for the regional championship. Cal forced the if-necessary game with an 8-0 shutout behind the strong pitching performance of freshman left-hander Kyle Porter (three hits, no runs, no walks and a career-high nine strikeouts). First baseman Devon Rodriguez earned Most Outstanding Player of the Houston Regional honors with a two-out, two-run single in the bottom of the ninth to lead Cal’s dramatic come-from-behind 9-8 victory over Baylor to advance to the Super Regional against Dallas Baptist. The Bears, led by 2011 Pac-10 Player of the Year Tony Renda, swept Dallas Baptist, 7-0 and 6-2, in Santa Clara to advance to the CWS. It was the fourth appearance by Cal in the NCAA Tournament in Esquer’s tenure, including three NCAA regionals in the last four years (the first time in school history). He was the 2001 Pac-10 Coach of the Year after the Bears went 34-25 and played in the Baton Rouge Regional (1-2). In 2008, Cal was 33-21-2 and competed in the Long Beach Regional, and in 2010 the Bears were 29-25 and played in the Norman, Okla. Regional (0-2). Sixty seven Bears have signed pro contracts under Esquer, including first round picks Brett Jackson (CF, Chicago Cubs, 31st overall) in 2009, David Cooper (1B, Toronto, 17th overall) in 2008, Brandon Morrow (RHP, Seattle, fifth overall) in 2006 and Conor Jackson (INF., Arizona, 19th overall) in 2003. Esquer came to Cal after serving as top assistant at Pepperdine (1996-99), and No. 2 assistant at Stanford (1991-96). A shortstop at Stanford (1984-87), he started on the 1987 College World Series championship team, earning All-Tournament honors. Esquer played professionally for four seasons with Baltimore, California and Milwaukee.
NOTING UCLA: *Coached by John Savage (11th year at UCLA, 350-254-1, .579), No. 3 UCLA is 26-7, 12-3 (1st) in Pac-12 after winning two-of-three last weekend at USC (W 9-3, L 5-0, W 8-3) and toppiing CS Fullerton, 7-2, Tuesday.
*Top hitters are junior left fielder Ty Moore (.379, 3 HR, 34 RBI), junior shortstop Kevin Kramer (.370, 4 HR, 20 RBI) and senior third baseman Chris Keck (.323, 6 HR, 31 RBI).
*Tentative rotation is junior right-hander James Kaprielian (7-2, 2.18 ERA), senior left-hander Grant Watson (5-3, 2.24 ERA) and freshman right-hander Griffin Canning (6-1, 2.74 ERA). Last season the Bruins finished 25-30-1 overall and 12-18 in the Pac-12.
SERIES RECORD: Cal has a 173-174 all-time record versus UCLA, last getting swept (3-2, 3-1, 6-1), March 14-16, 2014 at Evans Diamond. In the last series at Jackie Robinson Stadium, the Bears won one-of-three (W 5-1, L 8-3, L 10-2) March 22-24, 2013.

CAL AMONG PAC-12 LEADERS: As a team, Cal leads the Pac-12 in home runs (33) and is third in slugging percentage (.437), runs (213), RBI (187) and total bases (487). On the mound the Bears are fourth in team ERA (2.94) and opposing batting average (.238). Individually, Erceg is second in HR (8), fifth in total bases (79) and sixth in slugging percentage (.598). Cumberland is second in walks (25) and on-base percentage (.475). Paul is third in home runs (7) and fourth in slugging percentage (.612). Knapp is fourth in triples (3), fifth in runs (33) and seventh in walks (20). For pitching, Bain is fifth in ERA (2.18) and seventh in opposing batting average (.219), Ladrech is seventh in wins (5), Mason is eighth in innings pitched (55.1) and Nelson is sixth in saves (4).
MASON’S MASTERY: Junior right-hander Ryan Mason has had a stellar career for the Bears, owning a 16-5 mark with a 3.28 ERA, thriving as both a starter and a reliever. Mason was outstanding last year, going 7-1 with a 3.04 ERA, including non-league victories over Texas and Baylor, Pac-12 wins over Washington and Arizona at home, and conference victories over Stanford, USC and Oregon on the road. He threw 7.0 innings in the win over Washington, 8.0 innings in the victory at Stanford and had his first collegiate complete game in the win at USC. Mason then wrapped up the 2014 season by throwing 6.0 innings with one walk and five strikeouts in a 5-3 at No. 16 Oregon. His 7-1 mark in 2014 was the fifth-best single season winning percentage (.875) in school history. As a freshman in 2013, Mason went from being the Bear’s closer to the team’s No. 1 starter, finishing 5-3 with 3.76 ERA and 43 strikeouts in 69.1 innings. He won the first collegiate game he pitched (Feb. 8, 2013), striking out four Michigan batters in 1.2 innings in relief, and won his first collegiate start, March 8, 2013 versus Fresno State with seven strikeouts and only one walk in 5.0 innings.
JEFFERIES’ GEMS: Cal’s sophomore right-hander Daulton Jefferies had a spectacular start to his college career last season. Tabbed as the Bears’ opening day starter as a true freshman (the first time a true freshman has been Cal’s opening day starter since David Esquer became coach in 2000), Jefferies proceeded to shut-out Texas (7-0, 6.0 innings, six hits, one walk, four strikeouts) in his college debut at Evans Diamond and was named Pac-12 Pitcher of the Week. He followed that performance with a 3-0 shutout of East Tennessee State in Auburn, Ala., allowing only two hits with eight strikeouts in 7.0 innings. Unfortunately, Jefferies lost his next eight decisions with several close games, including a 2-1 loss at USC when he threw a complete game (8.0 innings with six hits, no walks and six strikeouts). Jefferies finished his first year with a 3.45 ERA and led the team in innings pitched (91.1).
KNAPP’S GOLDEN BEAR HERITAGE: Cal sophomore center fielder Aaron Knapp comes from some impressive Bear heritage. His father, Mike, was a standout catcher at Cal from 1985-86 and his brother, Andrew, caught and played outfield for the Bears from 2011-13. Andrew went on to be a second round draft pick of the Philadelphia Phillies following the 2013 season after batting a team-leading .350 with a team-best 16 doubles, eight home runs and 41 RBI – earning All-America and All-Pac-12 honors. Aaron became Cal’s starting center fielder early last season as a true freshman and had some outstanding games, batting .235 with three doubles, a triple, a home run and 13 RBI in 43 games, and was second on the team with eight stolen bases. His home run was a three-run inside then park homer at Cal Poly, and he was 14-for-39 (.359) with runners in scoring position.
CELSI’S SERIES: As a result of his spectacular play in the March 6-8 sweep of Chicago State, junior outfielder Brian Celsi was named National Player of the Week by both Collegiate Baseball and NCAA.com. Celsi had a phenomenal series versus Chicago State, going 8-for-11 (.727) with a double, two home runs and nine RBI. On March 6 he hit a grand slam, a three-run homer and had another RBI to tie a school record with eight RBI in a single game. On March 7, he was 3-for-3 with a double and knocked in the game-winning RBI in the eighth inning for a 5-4 Cal win. Last week versus Stanford, Celsi knocked in the game-winning RBI in the Bears’ 11-10 win April 11 and hit a grand slam April 12. He has etched his name in the Cal record books as he is tied with Dan McInerny (whose son, Robbie, is an infielder with the Bears), Brian Horwitz and Brett Jackson as players who have driven in eight runs in a game.
PAUL’S PRODUCTION: Senior first baseman Chris Paul is having an outstanding senior campaign as he is among the team leaders in almost every offensive category. Paul currently leads the team with a .353 average and has seven doubles, a triple, seven home runs and 28 RBI. He is also batting .390 (16-for-41) with runners in scoring position and has 13 multiple hit games and eight multiple RBI games. Paul reached base in each of the first 20 games this season as well. Along with being the March 16 conference player of the week, the Cal veteran started the year with four straight two-hit games, hitting a double and triple in the 11-1 win over Stanford Feb. 16, and hitting a three-run homer March 4 versus San Francisco. Paul, who has been a Northwoods League All-Star the past two summers, has had a solid career for the Bears. As a freshman he had a game-winning two-run single at Nebraska, and as a sophomore he had a grand slam and a three-run homer versus USC; and was eighth in the Pac-12 with eight home runs.
NEU’S PITCHING STAFF THRIVES: Cal pitching coach Mike Neu’s staff continues to be stellar this season, owning a 2.94 team ERA (third in the Pac-12) and an impressive 225 strikeouts in 294.0 innings. The Bears are also fourth in opponent batting average (.238). Highlights for the Cal pitchers include senior right-handed closer Dylan Nelson, 1-0 with four saves and striking out 25 batters in 17.2 innings. Freshman right-hander Jeff Bain is 4-1 with a 2.18 ERA and has 23 strikeouts in 41.1 innings, while fellow freshman right-hander Erik Martinez is 1-1 with a 1.83 ERA and a save. Senior left-hander Chris Muse-Fisher is 3-1 with a 2.49 ERA and two saves, and picked up the win April 11 versus Stanford, getting Cal out of a jam in the ninth. The Bears’ starters have also been impressive with sophomore Daulton Jefferies (2.20 ERA, 38 strikeouts in 32.2 innings) earning three wins, freshman left-hander Matt Ladrech (2.45 ERA, 55.0 innings pitched) winning five games, and junior right-hander Ryan Mason is 4-1 with a 2.93 ERA and a team-best 55.1 innings. Neu, a former standout at the University of Miami and a Major Leaguer with the Oakland A’s, was hired as Cal’s pitching coach in August of 2011. He was the head coach at Diablo Valley College from 2009-11, leading his team to an 87-41 mark (.680) with two Big 8 Conference titles. Neu’s pro baseball career included playing in the Los Angeles Dodgers, Florida Marlins, Oakland Athletics and Cincinnati Reds organizations. He was called up to the Major Leagues with the A’s on April 9, 2003 and posted a 3.64 ERA in 32.0 relief appearances (42.0 innings) that season. At Miami, Neu had a stellar 1999 campaign and helped the Hurricanes capture the College World Series title with a 6-5 victory over Florida State in the championship game. He finished the year 3-1 with a 2.94 ERA and tallied 110 strikeouts in 67.0 innings, earning Collegiate Baseball All-America honors. Neu led the nation in strikeouts per nine innings (14.8) and was selected to the All-CWS team with three saves and appearances in all four of Miami’s games. He joins David Esquer (starting shortstop on Stanford’s 1987 NCAA champions) as members of the Cal coaching staff who have won national titles.
CUMBERLAND’S CONTRIBUTIONS: In one of the most impressive performances by a freshman, catcher Brett Cumberland had an unbelievable game at Stanford on Feb. 16. Cumberland’s first collegiate home run was a grand slam in the first inning versus the Cardinal, and then he hit a three-run homer in the fourth inning to help propel the Bears to a 11-1 win. Cumberland teamed-up with fellow Cal freshman Matt Ladrech, who threw 7.0 innings with three hits, no runs, two walks and four strikeouts in his college debut.
ERCEG’S EXCELLENCE: A key to the Bears’ success this season has been the offensive production of sophomore third baseman/pitcher Lucas Erceg, who was both the March 23 National and Pac-12 Player of the Week after hitting two game-winning homers at Washington. Erceg is batting .341 with eight doubles, eight home runs and 29 RBI. He hit safely in Cal’s first 18 games and had a 20-game hitting streak carrying over from last season when he got hits in the last two Oregon games to end the 2014 season. Another highlight for Erceg was Feb. 21 in game one against UC Irvine when he was 4-for-4 with a pair of solo home runs. He is also an excellent reliever, striking out five batters in 3.2 innings.
QUICK BEAR HITS: Cal has had two National (Brian Celsi March 9, Lucas Erceg March 23) and two Pac-12 Players of the Week (Chris Paul March 16, Erceg March 23) this season...in D1Baseball.com’s Pac-12 preview Brett Cumberland is slated to be one of the conference’s impact freshmen and has already proven it - his seven RBI at Stanford is Cal’s second-most single-game RBI total...in 2014, 10 different Bears were on Major League rosters, including right-hander Tyson Ross, who was a National League All-Star for the Padres…27 Bears are currently in professional baseball…the Bears feature two coaches who won national championships as collegians – David Esquer won a 1987 NCAA title as shortstop at Stanford, and pitching coach Mike Neu was a standout reliever and got the save when Miami won the 1999 national crown.
BETTER THAN EVER EVANS DIAMOND: Evans Diamond, which has served as the home of Cal baseball since 1933, received a major upgrade with the installation of a new lighting system and scoreboard in 2013. Eight 90-foot light poles were erected around the field that now support nighttime television broadcasts, team practice and training. A modern electronic scoreboard, measuring 38 feet wide by 31 feet high, was also installed in left-center field. The new scoreboard offers scoring, game information, as well as fixed advertising and a full color video board measuring 24 feet wide by 14 feet high. Entering the 2013 season, Cal was the only Pac-12 school without permanent lighting at its baseball facility. With the Pac-12 Networks showing six Cal home games this season, the ability to play night games gives Cal maximum opportunity to be televised by the Networks. In addition, the upgrades will allow the Bears to be eligible to host NCAA Regional contests at Evans. The project was funded by a combination of donations and increased ticket and sponsorship revenue as a result of the upgrade. The first-ever night-time competition at Evans Diamond was March 28 for the Bears’ 2013 Pac-12 opener against USC in front of a record crowd of 2,133 fans. The new scoreboard was first unveiled May 10, 2013 versus Arizona State. The project was designed by Brereton Architects of San Francisco and constructed under the direction of Overaa Construction of Richmond.
BEARS IN THE BIG LEAGUES: Since David Esquer became the Cal coach in 2000, 67 Bears have signed professional contracts, including four first round selections - right-hander Brandon Morrow, who in 2006 became the highest draft pick in school history when he was the fifth pick overall by the Seattle Mariners; center fielder Jackson, a first-round pick of the Chicago Cubs in 2009; first baseman David Cooper, a first-round pick of the Toronto Blue Jays in 2008; and third baseman Conor Jackson, who in 2003 was drafted in the first round by the Arizona Diamondbacks. This spring, six Bears are on Major League rosters, including right-hander Tyson Ross, who was a National League All-Star for the San Diego Padres, and Allen Craig, with the Boston Red Sox. Craig won a World Series with the St. Louis Cardinals in 2011 and was a Major League All-Star in 2013. Brennan Boesch (Cincinnati Reds), Mark Canha (Oakland A’s), Morrow (San Diego Padres) and Marcus Semien (Oakland A’s) are also opening day rosters for the 2015 Major League season, as well managers from Cal, Bob Melvin (A’s) and Bryan Price (Reds).
CAL FACTS
Cal won the inaugural College World Series title in 1947, defeating former President George H.W. Bush’s Yale team, 8-7, in Kalamazoo, Michigan. The Bears’ program began in 1892 and is now in its 122nd season. George Bush, Sr., sent a letter of congratulations to David Esquer following Cal’s 2011 College World Series appearance.
The Golden Bears have had two players go on to become league MVPs in professional baseball – Jackie Jensen was the American League MVP in 1958 and Jeff Kent was the National League MVP in 2001.
Cal is one of only 21 schools to win NCAA Baseball titles and one of 14 schools with more than one national title (1947, 1957). The Bears have competed in six CWS (1947, 1957, 1980, 1988, 1992, 2011).
Geoff Blum, Cal’s starting shortstop as a freshman on the Bears’ 1992 College World Series team, had a game-winning homer for the Chicago White Sox in the 2005 Major League World Series.
Cal has three coaches in the ABCA Hall of Fame – Clint Evans (1930-54, led the Bears to the first CWS title in 1947); George Wolfman (1955-73, led Cal to the 1957 CWS title); and Bob Milano (1978-99, led the Bears to three CWS appearances (1980, 1988, 1992), including a third-place finish in 1980.
