CYRIL BUD “DOG” TURNER

Dog Turner was a part of Cal football for longer than many of us have been alive. He was such a kind and genuine person. I will miss so many things about him including the welcoming smile he gave to everyone who entered California Memorial Stadium. It’s really hard to imagine going to lunch and not seeing him in the football offices, heading to practice and not getting a fist bump from him, or entering the locker room after a game and not seeing him standing there beaming with pride for his team. Dog always said “it’s a great day to be a Bear”. Indeed it is, Dog, but just not as great today. We’ll miss you, pal, but we’ll always remember you and love you. Go Bears.

FROM THE CAL FAMILY

When I arrived at St. Mary’s College for my first-ever practice as the Bears' rookie play-by-play broadcaster in August of 1975, Bud Turner and Mike White were among the first people to make me feel at home. He was there when I arrived and until the moment I learned he had died this week I assumed he’d always be giving me a big grin every time I arrived to watch practice. He was at the tunnel to say hello when I arrived and somewhere in the locker room or on the field when I left. He was on the truck driving a thousand miles to a game in Pullman and loading it back up at midnight after the game. He had no ego, no dark side. The only time he wasn’t smiling was right after a defeat but his spirit and soul would not allow him to stay down very long. After all, there would soon be another game so that meant there would be another great day for Cal football. May God bless you my friend and I’m sure you’re already spreading the joy of Cal football among your many new and old friends in Heaven.
