Director of DEIBJ Operations and Engagement

If it wasn't for Cal, I wouldn't be alive. I was raised here. Despite facing the challenges of being a pregnant student, my mother crossed the graduation stage in the spring of 1998 holding newborn me in one arm and her diploma in the other. I was born into a Chicano Cal family that now contributes back through their relationships, time, and money. Cal is our second home, fundamental to my family's history. Even though I did not grow up low-income, I'm cognizant of my Mexican immigrant history - a gritty history of skipped meals, alcoholism, and working in the sun on fields and roofs. Two counselors changed my family history: one who encouraged my uncle to become a doctor (despite other's advice to pursue truck-driving) and another who encouraged my father to apply to Berkeley as a junior transfer student. Subsequently, the trajectory of my family changed. I was able to pursue a degree in Ethnic Studies and Sociology at Cal to develop myself into a resource as Director of Operations and Engagement for the DEIBJ office to help people who are trying to grow roses in the concrete like my family did.
