Katie Hughes is in her fifth season as an athletic trainer with Cal football in 2019, and her fourth season as a full-time athletic trainer after initially coming to Berkeley as an intern.

She assists in the coordination and implementation of day-to-day treatment and rehabilitation, organizes daily sports medicine practice set up, travel preparation and game day set up, and she assists in the supervision and education of sports medicine interns working with the football program. Hughes also served as the primary athletic trainer for the women’s lacrosse program during the 2016 season.

A certified athletic trainer since 2013, Hughes’ certifications include the National Athletic Trainers Association, Graston Technique Certified (M-1 Basic), Myofascial Decompression Technique Certified (Level I), NASM Performance Enhancement Specialist (PES) and an NSCA Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist.

From 2013-15, Hughes worked at Utah as a host athletic trainer for the football program from 2013-14 and a graduate assistant athletic trainer for the swimming & diving team from 2013-15. With the swimming & diving team, she provided coverage as the primary athletic trainer at all practices, workouts and competitions. She coordinated day-to-day treatments and rehabilitation for 68 swimming & diving student-athletes, worked with strength & conditioning coaches to perform functional assessments and develop injury prevention programs, served as preceptor for athletic training students and assisted students in applying athletic training education knowledge in a clinical setting.

Prior to heading to Salt Lake City, Hughes worked at Georgia as a student trainer from 2011-13, working primarily with the Bulldogs’ football, track & field and women’s tennis programs. In 2012, she volunteered with the Georgia football program as a rehabilitation intern.

She obtained her bachelor’s degree from Georgia in athletic training and exercise and sport science (Summa Cum Laude). She earned her master’s degree in sports medicine from Utah in 2015.
