Ortega has not played during his first three seasons with the Cal program from 2014-16 and is listed in No. 4 position at one inside linebacker spot on the 2017 preseason depth chart. Ortega earned second-team All-East Bay and All-East Bay Athletic League honors as well as honorable mention All-Bay Area and Scholar-Athlete recognition as a 2013 prep senior at De La Salle High School when he had 104 tackles, three interceptions that he returned 75 yards, 2.0 sacks and two pass breakups for a 14-1 squad that won North Coast Section and NorCal Regional titles before finishing as the runner-up in the California Open Division playoffs. He saw limited action as a junior in 2012 for a team that won the national and state of California crowns.

• Named a Sports Star of the Week when he had eight tackles and two interceptions that he ran back for 72 yards in the Northern California Championship Game vs. Folsom during his senior season
• Contributed 12 tackles, 6.0 tackles for loss and 1.0 sack (-7 yards) for his 2012 junior team that was a perfect 15-0 and the top-ranked squad in both the nation and state as well as No. 4 on the Xcellent 25 rank according to MaxPreps at the end of the year, while winning national, state, North Coast Section and Nor Cal Regional titles

• Cousin Brandon Madueño was a member of the Cal football program for five seasons from 2009-13
