Castignani made his Cal debut as a 2015 redshirt freshman primarily on special teams and also as a backup linebacker and contributed three tackles while playing in each of the team's final four games off the bench. Castignani redshirted as a 2014 true freshman after playing for a prep squad as a 2013 senior that reached the semifinals of the Central Coast Section Open Division playoffs. He earned first-team All-West Catholic Athletic League honors as a 2012 prep junior when he registered 89 tackles and a team-high 12.0 sacks for a WCAL championship club that was also the top-ranked team in the CCS according to MaxPreps.
