Career Photo GallerySteve Marshall spent two seasons as the offensive line coach at Cal from 2009-10 and has 31 years of experience as an offensive line coach at either the college or NFL level dating back to 1979.
During his two seasons at Cal, Marshall coached a 2009 offensive line that helped the Bears rank third in the Pac-10 in rushing offense (169.46 ypg) before finishing sixth in the conference in the category in 2010 (158.92 ypg). They also helped paved the way for second-team All-Pac-10 pick Shane Vereen to rush for a career-high 1,167 yards in 2010.
In addition, Marshall coached the 2010 Cal team to the fourth-fewest sacks in the Pac-10 (23 in 12 games, 1.92 spg), improving drastically from a 2009 club that was ninth in the Pac-10 with an average of 2.38 sacks allowed per contest (31 in 13 games).
He also coached three Cal offensive linemen that received All-Pac-10 recognition on five occasions, including first-team choice Mike Tepper in 2009 and second-team pick Mitchell Schwartz in 2010. Chris Guarnero earned honorable mention honors both seasons, while Schwartz was an honorable mention choice in 2009.
Marshall previously coached in the NFL for six years, two with the Cleveland Browns (2007-08) and four with the Houston Texans (2002-05).
While with the Browns, Marshall's work helped clear the way for Jamal Lewis to rush for more than 1,000 yards this past year. In 2007, Cleveland's line tied for third in the NFL for third fewest sacks allowed (19).
Prior to joining the Browns, Marshall worked as an assistant offensive line coach with the Houston Texans from 2002-03 before being named the Texans' offensive line coach from 2004-05. He spent the 2006 season out of coaching.
Prior to joining Cal, the previous college he coached at were Plymouth State (1979), Tennessee (1980-81, 1993-95), Marshall (1982-83), Louisville (1984), Murray State (1985-86), Virginia Tech (1987-92), UCLA (1996), Texas A&M (1997), North Carolina (1998-99) and Colorado (2000-01).
As offensive line coach at Colorado during the 2000-01 campaigns, Marshall helped the Buffaloes capture a Big 12 championship and a spot in the Fiesta Bowl. He moved to Colorado after a two-year stint at North Carolina, where he served as offensive coordinator and offensive line coach. The Tar Heels earned an appearance in the Las Vegas Bowl in 1998.
As offensive coordinator and offensive line coach at Texas A&M in 1997, Marshall was part of a 9-4 Aggie squad the ended the year with a No. 20 Associated Press ranking, claimed a spot in the Big 12 championship game and played in the Cotton Bowl.
A native of Vernon, Conn., Marshall began his coaching career as offensive line coach at Plymouth State in New Hampshire in 1979. He then served as an assistant offensive line coach at Tennessee from 1980-81 before overseeing the offensive line and kicking game at Marshall from 1982-83.
Marshall coached the offensive line and tight tends at Louisville in 1984, then worked as offensive coordinator and offensive line coach at Murray State from 1985-86. He served as offensive line coach at Virginia Tech for one season in 1987 before being promoted to offensive coordinator, a position he held through 1992.
Marshall returned to Tennessee in 1993, first has offensive line coach in '93, then adding the title of running game coordinator for the 1994-95 campaign. The Volunteers led the SEC in rushing all three seasons and beat Ohio State in the Citrus Bowl following the 1995 season to earn a No. 2 ranking in the final coaches' poll. Marshall made his first foray into the Pac-10 as offensive line coach at UCLA in 1996 before going to Texas A&M.

• Chad Clifton (Tennessee) - Has played the last 10 seasons with Green Bay, earning a Pro Bowl nod in 2007; second-team collegiate All-American as a senior.
• Kris Farris (UCLA) - Won the 1998 Outland Trophy and played briefly in the NFL.
• Andre Gurode (Colorado) - Earned 2007 NFL All-Pro honors and is a four-time Pro Bowl selection (2006, '07, '08, '09) as a member of the Dallas Cowboys; All-American as a senior at Colorado.
• Marwan Hage (Colorado) - Has excelled in the Canadian Football League, earning CFLPA All-Star team nods in each of the last three years (2007, '08, '09) as a member of the Hamilton Tiger-Cats; two-time All-Big 12 selection.
• Seth McKinney (Cleveland Browns/Texas A&M) - Has played eight NFL seasons with Miami (2002-06), Cleveland (2007-08) and Buffalo (2009); was only the fifth center in the history of college football to start every game in his career.
• Steve McKinney (Texas A&M/Houston Texans) - Spent 11 seasons in the NFL with Indianapolis (1998-2001), Houston (2002-07) and Seattle (2008) after a collegiate career that included first-team All-Big 12 honors.
• Jim Pyne (Virginia Tech) - Earned consensus collegiate All-American honors and was a finalist for both the Lombardi and Outland trophies before going on to a seven-year NFL career.
• Mitchell Schwartz (Cal) - Has started all 38 games possible over the first three seasons of his Cal career (the most recent two campaigns under Marshall), earning second-team All-Pac-10 recognition as a junior in 2010 after picking up honorable mention All-Pac-10 honors as a sophomore.
• Eric Steinbach (Cleveland Browns) - Has been in the NFL for the past seven seasons with Cincinnati (2003-06) and Cleveland (2007-09), and was named an alternate for the 2008 Pro Bowl; Big 12 Offensive Lineman of the Year in 2002 while at Iowa.
• Mike Tepper (Cal) - Flourished under Marshall as a sixth-year senior in 2009, earning first-team All-Pac-10 honors for the first time in his career while starting his first career 13 games at the critical left tackle position; signed a free agent contract with the Dallas Cowboys in April of 2010 before eventually playing the 2010 campaign professionally with the Sacramento Mountain Lions of the United Football League.
• Joe Thomas (Cleveland Browns) - Two-time All-Pro selection, earning first-team honors in 2009 after a second-team pick in 2008; taken third overall in the 2007 NFL Draft.
