AS A SENIOR (2017):
- Joined the Bears for the 2017 season and appeared in 15 games, compiling a 3.18 ERA in 17 innings pitched. Did not record a decision.
- Recorded the final out of Cal's 2017 season, entering with the bases loaded and the tying run at first against No. 15 Arizona. Got a ground out to end the game and preserve a 7-4 victory for his lone save of the season.
- Held opponents to a .226 batting average.
- Did not allow a run over his final five appearances in a stretch that included appearances against No. 1 Oregon State, No. 10 Stanford, No. 7 TCU and No. 15 Arizona.
- Made his Cal debut with 2.1 innings of relief at Texas Tech on Feb. 25.
HIGH SCHOOL/PREVIOUS SCHOOLS/PERSONAL:
- Native of San Diego, Calif. comes to the Bears by way of San Diego Mesa College, Miami-Ohio and La Jolla Country Day School.
- Spent 2014 and 2015 at San Diego Mesa College where he worked both as a starter and out of the bullpen. In 2015, went 2-3 in eight appearances (six starts) and struck out 17 in 31.1 innings with a 4.60 ERA. Held hitters to a .248 batting average against and a .133 batting average against in conference play.
- In 2014, served as San Diego Mesa’s closer and converted all eight save opportunities he faced. Struck out 18 in 22.2 innings and had a 4.37 ERA (including a 1.13 ERA in save opps). Led the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference in saves and appearances, finished top five in the state in saves and participated in the Junior College Fall All-Star Game in fall of 2014.
- Redshirted his one year at Miami-Ohio.
- Graduated from La Jolla Country Day School in 2012 where he earned All-Coastal South League honors as a senior in 2012. Three-year varsity player compiled a 15-4 record with a 2.04 ERA.
- Helped La Jolla Country Day win its first CIF title in 2011 and went 2-0 in three playoff appearances. Participated in the San Diego Junior All-Star Game after his junior year.
- Played club ball for the San Diego Crush.
- Interned for a pro-bono immigration law firm in San Diego in the summer of 2016.
- Majoring in English and would someday like to write and publish a novel. Also potentially interested in working towards becoming a sports agent, baseball scout or law school.
- Parents are Mary and Andy Lutz. Has one sibling, Erin, who plays soccer at Lewis & Clark College.
