Three-time collegiate All-American pitcher Anjelica Selden joined the Cal softball coaching staff as an assistant coach for pitching in the summer of 2018.
Selden, who played at UCLA from 2005-09, will work with the Bears' four-pitcher staff, which includes Cal's single-season saves record holder Zoe Conley and Kamalani Dung, who threw the program's first perfect game since 2010 when the team visited Honolulu last season. Selden brings nearly a decade of coaching experience at all levels to the program including time as an international coach.
After growing up in nearby Vacaville, Calif., Selden, who said that Cal was in her final two choices before ultimately choosing to play at UCLA, will be integral in recruiting top talent in a familiar area.
Before devoting her time to coaching, Selden, who is fluent in Italian, spent 2010-12 in Caserta, Italy playing professionally in the top division of the Italian softball league during her first of two stints overseas. She returned to The Boot in 2017 to coach with the Castelfranco Thunder, providing pitching instruction to its professional team, and 11U, 14U and 18U teams.
Stateside, Selden has coached prep-aged athletes in both Los Angeles and Concord, and has provided individual coaching lessons to softball players from around the state, helping nearly 30 of her students become collegiate softball student-athletes.
At UCLA, Selden won 110 games, second on the Bruins' all-time wins list, with a 1.35 earned run average and first in career strikeouts (1,441). Selden also ranks second at UCLA in appearances (167), second in complete games (127) and innings pitched (1012.1), tied for eighth in saves (5) and eighth in shutouts (44).
Selden led the Bruin pitching staff in wins, strikeouts and innings pitched every season. She set a single-season record for strikeouts in her freshman campaign of 2005 with 485 and followed that up with 408 as a sophomore, which ranks second on the list. Selden tossed two no-hitters, both in 2005, as well as 21 one-hitters.
Selden was a first-team NFCA All-American in 2006 and 2008 and a second-team honoree in 2005. She also earned All-Region honors each season (first team in 2006 and `08) and All-Pac-10 accolades all four years (first team in 2005, `06 and `08). In 2005, Selden was named Pac-10 Conference Freshman of the Year and received All-Tournament honors at the Women's College World Series. She was a 10-time Pac-10 Pitcher of the Week, two-time NFCA National Player of the Week and two-time USA Softball National Player of the Week.
She graduated in 2009 with a degree in history and minor in women's studies.
