2017 Cross Country Season: Competed in five meets for the Bears in the 2017 season... started his senior season with a 12th place finish at Joe Piane Notre Dame Invitational (24:03.8)... earned top-20 finishes at Pac-12 Championships (17th, 24:10.0) and NCAA West Regionals (13th, 29.50.1)... one of two Bears male competitors in the NCAA Championships in Indianapolis, finishing in 165th place (31.16.0)...  awarded USTFCCCA individual All-Academic honors for his academic prowess, along with an honorable mention Pac-12 All-Academic nod in his final Golden Bear Cross Country season. 

2016 Track Season: Finished 11th in the 5000m at the Pac-12 Championships with a time of 14:03.29 … also took 33rd in the 5K at the NCAA West Regional meet in 14:45.99 … set three PRs during the season: 1500m (3:51.32), 3000m (8:17.47) and 5000m (14:03.29) … led the Bears in both the 3000m and 5000m … during the 2016 indoor campaign, placed 17th in the 3000m at the MPSF Championships (8:12.32) … named honorable mention Pac-12 All-Academic and was a USTFCCCA All-Academic selection … helped Cal’s cross country team qualify for the NCAA meet in the fall of 2016, taking 17th at Pac-12’s and 16th at NCAA regionals.

2016 Cross Country Season:  Competed in five meets for the Bears in the 2016 season … started his junior campaign with a first place finish in the 8k at the San Francisco Invitational (24:21.1) … posted back-to-back top-20 finishes at the Pac-12 Championships (17th) and NCAA West Regionals (16th) … did not finish 10k at nationals due to a hamstring injury in the first two miles … named Pac-12 All-Academic honorable mention.

2015 Track Season: Did not compete.

2014 Track Season: Did not compete during the indoor season ... Made his California track & field debut on 3/8 at the California Outdoor Opener with a fifth place finish in the 1500m with a time of 3:52.22 ... Clocked a time of 1:54.16 in the 800m and 3:53.37 in the 1500-meters at the Hornet Invitational on 3/22 ... Posted a mark of 1:54.90 in the 800-meters on 4/5 at the Stanford Invitational ... Placed seventh in the 1500m at the Big Meet on 4/12 with a time of 3:54.09 and also anchored the 4x400m relay that clocked a time of 3:25.34.

High School: Attended Granite Bay High School in Granite Bay, Calif. … Sierra Foothill League Champion in Cross Country in 2011, 2012 … Sac-Joaquin Section Division 1 Champion for cross country in 2012, and track for 1600m in 2013 … Sac-Joaquin Masters Champion in Track for 1600m in 2013 … Best marks during high school were 15:20 for Cross Country 5km in 2012, 49.72 in 400m in 2013, 1:53.81 in 800m in 2013, and 4:13:94 in 1600m in 2013.

Personal: Born on October 24, 1994 … Parents are Julie Thornton and Jerome Brendel … physics major … has four siblings … enjoys being a photographer in his free time … brother, Tyler, is also on the track & field team.
