CORVALLIS, Ore. -- Sophomore walk-on Ryan Forehan-Kelly came off the bench to score a career-high 17 points to lead California to a 71-65 victory over Oregon State Saturday afternoon at Gill Coliseum.
With the win, the Bears improved to 10-6 overall and 1-3 in the Pac-10, while OSU fell to 8-6, 0-3.
Forehan-Kelly, who had scored just 12 points all year, made six of his seven attempts from the field in the game, including four three-pointers. He had 11 of his total in the first half, almost single-handily keeping Cal in the game.
The Bears fell behind, 12-4, when Forehan-Kelly nailed his first three-pointer for Cal's first field goal of the contest at the 12:35 mark. On Cal's next trip down the court, Forehan-Kelly hit another trey and, minutes later, the Bears were within two at 16-14.
OSU re-took control at 27-18, but the Bears went on a 10-0 run to grab their first lead at 28-27 with 3:23 left. The Beavers were up, 33-31, at the break.
In the second half, Cal relied on an unfamiliar lineup with players such as Raymond King, Robbie Jones and Shahar Gordon getting plenty of minutes. The changes were due to the fact that starting guard Dennis Gates sat out with an injured knee and starting center Nick Vander Laan was limited to just four minutes with a stomach virus.
The Bears, though, found themselves down, 41-35, early in the second period, But a 12-0 run, keyed by five points from King and another Forehan-Kelly three-pointer put Cal ahead, 47-41.
OSU came back to take a brief 56-54 lead before Cal took control down the stretch. A three-pointer from Brian Wethers put the Bears up 61-56 with 2:32 remaining, and Cal sank 10-of-14 free throws in the last 1:32 to clinch the victory.
In addition to Forehan-Kelly, Joe Shipp had 12 points and Wethers and Sean Lampley added 11 each. Gordon and Solomon Hughes tied for team honors with six rebounds apiece.
"We knew we needed a total team effort today, and that's exactly what he got," said Cal head coach Ben Braun. "Everyone contributed to this win. I thought our team played with guts and determination."
