Helped by a six-run sixth inning, No. 4 ranked Stanford defeated Cal, 10-6, Saturday afternoon at Sunken Diamond. The Bears, who defeated the Cardinal, 7-5 in 11 innings Friday night, fall to 24-23 overall and 10-10 in the Pac-10, while Stanford improves to 33-11 and 12-5 in league.
The Cardinal scored the game's first run in the fourth inning on a sacrifice fly by Damien Alvarado off of Cal starter David Cash (7-4, 5.3 innings, seven hits, five runs, two walks, one strikeout). The Bears came back to take a 2-1 lead when Xavier Nady hit a solo home run to center field in the fifth inning and freshman right fielder Brad Smith had an RBI single to center in the sixth inning off of Stanford starter Justin Wayne (10-3, 7.0 innings, 10 hits, three earned runs, three walks, six strikeouts).
Things got ugly for Cal in the bottom of the sixth when the Cardinal brought 12 batters to the plate against Cash, Andrew Sproul and Jon Cuccias. Key hits for Stanford were an RBI double by John Gall, an RBI double by Chris O'Riordan, an RBI single by Damien Alvarado, an RBI walk by Craig Thompson and a two-run double by Eric Bruntlett.
The Bears were able to score twice in the top of the seventh on RBI singles by Clint Hoover and Rob Meyer to get within 7-4. But, the Cardinal scored three times in the bottom of the seventh on an RBI double by Andy Topham and a two-run homer by Arik VanZandt on a ball that popped out of center fielder Meyer's glove.
Cal made the final score, 10-6, on a lead-off homer to center field by Mike Tonis and an RBI ground out by Meyer.
Tonis had another big day at the plate as he was 2-for-3 with a double and a home run. On Friday, he was 3-for-6 with a home run and three RBI. Hoover, Meyer, Smith and freshman designated hitter John Baker also had two hits apiece for the Bears.
Cal will next play the third game of the three-game series versus Stanford, Sunday, Apr. 30 at 1 p.m. at Stanford's Sunken Diamond.
