BERKELEY, CA - The California baseball team ended its 2000 season with a 11-2 loss to Fresno State Tuesday afternoon at Evans Diamond. The Bears finish 25-28 overall, while the Bulldogs improved to 38-15. Cal was 11-13 in the Pac-10 this season.

Fresno State dominated the game by scoring seven runs in the first three innings, including a two-run homer by Mike Bowlin in the second and five runs in the third off of Bear starter Jason Ball (0-1, 2.3 innings, six hits, seven runs, five earned runs, one walk). The Bulldogs added on four more runs with two runs in both the fifth and sixth innings.

Cal finally got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI single by Tommy Callen, scoring David Weiner, who had a one-out double. The Bears other run came in the seventh inning when Sam Petke hit a two-out solo home run to left field.

The winning pitcher for Fresno State was starter Nick Moran, who improved his record to 3-2 by pitching 8.3 innings with eight hits, two runs, one walk and eight strikeouts.

Callen was the hitting leader for Cal, going 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI. It was the final collegiate game for seven Bear seniors: Ball, Callen, Petke, Jon Cuccias, Kevin Johnson, Jon Shirley and Brad Steele. Petke's home run came in his last at-bat as a Golden Bear.

Cal's top two juniors, Xavier Nady and Mike Tonis, both finished the game, 1-4. Nady and Tonis are potential first round draft picks in June's amateur draft and most likely concluded their college careers. Nady is the school record holder for home runs (57), RBI (191) and total bases (479), while Tonis is third on the all-time Cal home run list (40).

Home Runs: Fresno State: Bowlin, two-run homer in the second.

California: Petke, solo home run in the seventh.
