Cal Tops Holy Cross, 10-7

April 20, 2002

Worcester, MA - The Cal Bears (10-4, 5-2) road another strong performance from sophomore attacker Emily Edwards en route to a non conference 10-7 win over the Holy Cross Crusaders, Friday afternoon in Worcester, Massachusetts. Edwards' four-goal performance gives her 35 on the year, a new career record - beating last year's personal best of 34. Sophomore midfielder Julianne Wu notched her fourth hat trick of the season to give her 19 goals overall.

The Bears and Crusaders battled back and forth in the first half, with Cal taking an early 2-0 lead in the first two minutes behind goals from sophomore midfielder Kelley Queisser and Edwards. Down 4-1 with 15 minutes left in the half, Holy Cross would make a comeback, scoring two straight goals to narrow the Bears' lead to two at the midway point, 5-3.

Just 1:49 into the second stanza, the Crusaders slipped one past Cal goalkeeper Eden Coelho to narrow the Cal lead to one, 5-4. But that was as close the Crusaders would get, as the Bears would not let the Crusaders within two goals the rest of the afternoon. Freshman attacker Erin Hafkenschiel netted her first and second collegiate goals in the second half, rallying the Bears to a 10-7 victory.

Both goalies were busy in net as Crusader goalkeeper Kellaigh Malangone stopped 14 shots while Coelho notched 15 saves of her own.

The Bears take on Harvard on Sunday, April 21 at 12:00 noon in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
