Box Score

BERKELEY, Calif. - California sophomore midfielder Liz Reifsnyder scored two goals and added three assists in the Golden Bears' 19-8 rout of first-year MPSF opponent Oregon on Sunday at Memorial Stadium. Senior Molly Brady, junior Leanne Zilioli, sophomore Laura Cavallo and freshman Brittany Aungier each scored a hat trick for the Bears, who improve to 10-6 (3-1 MPSF), while the Ducks fall to 4-10 (1-4 MPSF).

Reifsnyder was the game's top scorer with five points. Brady, Zilioli and Aungier had assists to score four points each for the Bears, while Jen May led Oregon in scoring with three goals and one assist. Cal's 19 goals tie the season high that the Bears scored in a 19-5 rout of Saint Mary's on April 5.

"Reif had a fantastic game," Cal head coach Jill Malko said. "She quietly gets the job done. She had a couple goals. She's just key in our midfield. She's just so smart and knows where to be. I thought she did a nice job on attack, too, controlling the tempo and putting the ball in the mix.

"Another person who had a really good game was Kathryn Lindler. It's hard as a defender. You don't really notice them all the time. She just stepped up, took the ball away a couple of times and really played good help defense. Also, Erin Hafkenschiel had a really good game in shutting out No. 28 [Jana Bradley], who's really a key to their offense."

After more than 13 minutes of scoreless action to open the game, Aungier scored at 13:36 and Zilioli scored off a free position shot at 15:15 to put Cal up 2-0. But Oregon scored the next three goals - with two from Jenny Browne and one from Bradley - to take a 3-2 lead.

Cal then scored four unanswered goals - with one from freshman Danni Zuralow, two from junior Schuyler Sokolow and one from Aungier - to retake the lead at 6-3. Oregon's Kate Fleming scored at 16:20 and Brady scored with 18 seconds remaining in the first half to give Cal a 7-4 lead. May scored her first goal as time expired to cut the Bears' lead to two, at 7-5, at intermission.

"We had kind of a slow start," Malko said. "I've been worried about Oregon all year. I just feel like they have a lot of talent. They've been getting better and better. I think it's human nature sometimes to overlook a young opponent like that, and I think it taught us all a lesson there that in any given game it doesn't matter what your reputation is. I think they're building a reputation. I was very impressed with their play."

Brady and sophomore Laura Cavallo scored unassisted goals at 30:49 and 31:02, respectively, to give Cal some breathing room at 9-5 early in the second half. But the Ducks again responded, with goals from Erin Gaebe and May, to pull within two, at 9-7.

The Bears broke the game open with a five-goal run highlighted by Reifsnyder's back-to-back goals at 41:15 and 42:43, respectively, to take a 14-7 lead. May scored off a free position shot before Cal reeled off another five goals, including two each from Cavallo and Zilioli and a goal and an assist by Aungier.

"Our shooting percentage in the first half was atrocious, and then we turned that around," Malko added. "That really made all the difference as well as, in the second half, getting draw controls and being able to really possess the ball. You don't want that team to get the ball, because they can score a fastbreak on you. You really need to take good shots and have multiple shot opportunities. We stuck to the gameplan in the second and did a good job of controlling the tempo."

The Bears close out the regular season against MPSF opponent UC Davis (8-6, 2-2 MPSF) at 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 30, at Memorial Stadium. The MPSF Championship tournament will be held May 5-7 on the campus of Saint Mary's in Moraga.
