Cal Men Fifth, Women Eighth at Stanford Invitational

STANFORD, Calif. - The California men's cross country team placed fifth with 141 points Saturday at the 32nd-annual Stanford Invitational at the Stanford Golf Course. The Golden Bear women finished eighth with 246 points out of 32 teams.

Stanford won the men's 8K team crown with 50 points, and Chico State was second with 66 points, followed by UC Santa Barbara (102) and Liberty (131). Eight teams finished behind Cal.

Freshman Mark Matusak paced Cal in 17th by touring the 8K course in 24:24. Senior Giliat Ghebray wasn't far behind in 19th (24:27), and his younger brother, Yosef, took 23rd (24:34). Also scoring for the Bears were freshman Jake Schmitt (46th, 25:03) and sophomore Chris Chavez (57th, 25:15).

Liberty's Josh and Jordan McDougal finished first and second, respectively, in 23:24 and 23:46.

Stanford won the women's 6K title with 31 points, while Chico State was third with 136 points and Portland was third with 155.

Junior Bridget Duffy led the Bears by placing 37th in a time of 22:45 on the 6K course. Duffy's performance comes on the heels of her second-place showing at the Aggie Open Sept. 10. Cal sophomore Rebecca Yau took 46th place (22:55), and senior Abby Parker finished 53rd (23:05). Also scoring for Cal were junior Elizabeth Mayeda (61st, 23:19) and redshirt freshman Alysia Johnson (67th, 23:25).

Stanford's Aranna Lambie claimed the individual 6K title in a time of 21:15, with her teammate Kathleen Trotter following in 21:19.

Cal senior Kevin Davis posted a fifth-place showing (12:22) in the men's 4K event. Junior Brooke Wells covered the 4K course in 15:25 to finish 34th.
