No. 14 Cal Loses to No. 3 USC, 3-0

BERKELEY, Calif. - No. 14 California lost to No. 3 USC, 3-0, in its Pac-10 home opener Friday afternoon at Edwards Stadium. The Golden Bears' record fell to 8-4, 0-2 Pac-10, while the Trojans improved to 11-1-1, 3-0 Pac-10.

"We're not paying attention to details," said Cal head coach Neil McGuire. "As a result, good teams are going to take advantage of the mistakes we make. This is the second game in a row that teams - Stanford and now USC - have taken advantage of the looseness we have shown on defense."

Marihelen Tomer netted USC's first goal in the 29th minute by heading in the rebound of Lauren Brown's shot that Cal goalkeeper Gina Pellegrini saved off the cross bar.

Karter Haug extended the Trojans lead to 2-0 with a 25-yard shot that found the upper-right corner of the net in the 42nd minute.

Brown added an insurance goal in the 57th minute when she converted a 10-yard shot after Cal's defense couldn't clear a USC corner kick.

Cal had a chance to erase the shutout with under-three minutes remaining in the game. Junior Valerie Barnes was pulled down in the penalty box by USC goalkeeper Brittany Massro, and the referee issued a yellow card and awarded the Bears a penalty kick. Senior midfielder Caroline Lea lined up for the penalty kick, and her attempt was saved by Massro. Lea had a chance to knock in the rebound, but her shot was saved by a defender.

The Trojans held a 12-6 shot advantage, but both teams registered five shots in the second half, which featured periodic light rain. Lea paced Cal with three shots. Freshmen Emily Shibata and Megan Jesolva and Barnes each took one shot for the Bears.

Cal returns to action against No. 1 UCLA Sunday, Oct. 21, at 1 p.m. at Edwards Stadium.
