Fourteenth-ranked California came out strong against top-ranked UCLA but still lost to the Bruins, 2-0, Sunday afternoon at Edwards Stadium. The Golden Bears record fell to 8-5 (0-3 Pac-10) after playing the No. 1 team in the country for the third time in the last four games, while UCLA improved to 11-1-2 (4-0).
"We came out and actually tried to attack this team," said Cal head coach Neil McGuire. "Against USC, I felt like we let them dictate the tempo and rhythm of the game, and today against UCLA, we decided we were going to create the rhythm and tempo. We did for small periods of the game. UCLA is very talented, and it was a very good competitive game for our players."
Lauren Cheney, the Pac-10's leading scorer, scored a goal in each half for UCLA, which outshot Cal, 15-8, for the game. Redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Rosie Aguilera made her first start as a Bear, making six saves in 90 minutes.
"You have no idea how proud I am of that young lady," said McGuire. "It's remarkable to be told the day before that you're starting against the No. 1 team in the country. For her to perform the way she did is very admirable, and she deserves every respect we could possibly put upon her."
Cal had a good chance to score on the first shot of the game. Freshman forward Alex Morgan crossed the ball from the right side to senior forward Stephanie Wieger, who took a shot that went wide right of the goal.
Cheney tallied her first goal of the game in the 21st minute, with Caitlyn Mac Kechnie and Kara Lang earning the assists.
In the 54th minute, senior forward Valerie Barnes had another dangerous shot attempt for the Bears. Barnes lofted the ball from the right side of the field to the far post. UCLA goalkeeper Valerie Henderson, who made three saves today, gave chase from her position on the near post, and the ball floated just wide of the goal.
Henderson came up with an acrobatic save on Cal freshman midfielder Emily Shibata's attempt in the 61st minute to preserve the shutout.
Less than a minute later, Cheney netted her second goal of the game after receiving a pass from Danesha Adams.
Cal kept the pressure on over the final 15 minutes, earning four corner kicks and three shots, including one on goal by freshman defender Megan Jesolva. Barnes and Wieger paced the Bears with two shots each in the game, while Cheney topped the Bruins with five shots.
Cal continues Pac-10 action when it plays Arizona State at 7 p.m. MT on Friday, Oct. 26, in Tempe, Ariz.
