BERKELEY, Calif. -
Senior midfielder Caitlin Hannegan scored on a rebound shot in the 102nd minute to propel No. 17 California to a 1-0 victory over Colorado College Sunday at Edwards Stadium. With the win, the Golden Bears claimed the 13th-annual Cal Invitational and improved to 2-0. The Tigers fell to 0-1-1.
"Today's win shows that my team has great character," said Cal head coach Neil McGuire. "It's not something I ever doubted. I think the team works extremely hard regardless of what the score is. For them to be able to pull themselves up when they're fatigued and score that goal at the end, it shows great character."
In the second minute of the final overtime period, Cal freshman Megan Jesolva launched a 25-yard shot, which Colorado College's goalkeeper Geneva Sills saved. However, the ball rolled free in front of the goal, and Hannegan pounced on it for her first goal of the season and second of her career.
"Colorado College is very good defensively," said McGuire. "The chances they gave us were not easy chances. That one that fell right in front of the goal was probably the easiest one we had, and obviously, we were happy that we were able to execute."
Cal held a 20-8 shot advantage, including an 8-0 edge in overtime. Junior forward Valerie Barnes, the tournament's Most Valuable Player, had a dangerous chance saved in the second minute of overtime, and less than a minute later Brianna Bak's shot was blocked by a field player. Redshirt sophomore forward Katherine Daiss took three shots in the first overtime.
The Bears kept up the pressure in the second overtime and broke the scoreless tie on their second shot attempt. Cal goalkeeper Gina Pellegrini helped give her team a chance to win the game in extra minutes by punching Alex Bannerman's shot over the cross bar with six seconds to play in regulation.
Pellegrini made three saves, while Sills secured eight on the day. Cal sophomore forward Lisa Kevorkian and freshman midfielder Emily Shibata had excellent chances saved in the first 30 minutes of the game, and redshirt sophomore Torrey Delaplane forced Sills into a diving save to her left with 11:57 to go in the second half.
In the first game today, Saint Mary's (1-0-1) rallied to beat Columbia, 2-1, in overtime. Jessica Menzhuber headed in the game-winning goal off a corner kick in the 92nd minute. Columbia (0-2) grabbed a 1-0 lead with an 11th-minute score by Allison Leonard, and Saint Mary's Alex Ciliento tied the game in the 74th minute. Allie Weiner assisted on both Gaels' goals.
Cal travels to the Saint Mary's Fall Soccer Classic next weekend. The Bears face Cal State Bakersfield Friday, Sept 7, at 2 p.m., and Vermont Sunday, Sept. 4, at noon.
