Daiss Goal Propels No. 19 Cal to 1-0 Win over Kansas

LAWRENCE, Kan. - Redshirt sophomore forward Katherine Daiss scored in the 66th minute to lift No. 19 California to a 1-0 victory over Kansas Sunday afternoon at Jayhawk Soccer Complex. The Golden Bears improved to 6-2 with their sixth shutout of the season, while the Jayhawks fell to 1-7-1.

"Kansas is a much better team than its record," said Cal head coach Neil McGuire. "They've played a tough schedule and have had several 1-0 losses. They're talented. My team showed a lot of character after Friday's disappointing loss to Missouri. They showed intensity and desire across the field and demonstrated exceptional discipline defensively and offensively."

Daiss scored the game's only goal and her second of the season after converting a cross from the right side by redshirt sophomore Torrey Delaplane. Daiss scored from about six-yards out to grab a share of Cal's season point lead at six.

Cal and Kansas each took 11 shots -- five in the first half and six in the second half. Freshman midfielder Emily Shibata leading the way for the Bears with three. Eight different players took shots for Cal.

Cal held a 5-1 edge in corner kicks.

Sophomore Gina Pellegrini recorded six saves to earn the shutout for Cal.

The Bears return home after a six-game road swing to face Saint Mary's Sept. 28 at 4 p.m. at Edwards Stadium.
