Ashley Glosz came off the bench to score a hat trick and collect an assist in No. 14 California's 9-1 rout of Davidson on Saturday afternoon at Maxwell Family Field. The Golden Bears' record improved to 9-2 (5-0 NorPac) and Davidson fell to 3-10 (0-2 NorPac) after the conference clash.
The game, which started at 3:15 p.m., was pushed back from its original start time of 1 p.m. due to Davidson flight problems. Davidson arrived in the San Francisco Bay Area today, and the Bears pounced on the Wildcats.
Senior forward Katie Knoche, who scored Cal's first and last goals today, put the Bears on the scoreboard at the 5:18 mark, set up by senior midfielder Andrea Lo's penalty corner and senior defender Rachel Moffitt's stick stop.
Glosz, normally a starter, entered the match at the 13:04 mark and scored her first goal at 15:00 with a shot from the top of the circle. She scored her three goals over an eight minute and twenty-three second span, notching another unassisted goal at 20:34 and tallying her third off a penalty stroke at 23:23. Cal led 4-0 after Glosz's scoring spree.
"She responded well and appropriately in terms of just playing hard," Onstead said of Glosz not starting. "It's not an easy decision. You wonder about the emotional side and how it affects the team. All in all, I thought she handled it well, and good for her. Three goals in nine minutes - that's awesome."
Davidson called a timeout after the penalty stroke, and Cal did not score for more than 10 minutes after play resumed. Glosz was involved in the next goal, assisting on senior defender Christina McGrath's goal at 33:42. Cal took its 5-0 lead into halftime.
McGrath, who had been suffering from a slight injury, made her first start of the season against Davidson and also collected her first goal and, in the second half, her first assist of 2008.
Senior defender Carolina Bistue nabbed Cal's first goal of the second half; senior forward Kellie York's penalty corner and Moffitt's stick stop set up the goal at 36:29.
At 40:22, senior midfielder Gwen Belomy assisted on York's goal, shot from close range, to give Cal a 7-0 lead.
Freshman forward Jessica Kreck played her first minutes of the season for Cal today and scored the first goal of her Bears career at 46:18, making the score 8-0 Cal.
"I realize she may be the fourth forward [for us]," Onstead said of Kreck. "We've been looking at that for a couple of weeks. I pulled the trigger today, and I think she made me look good. If I think you can help me, you'll play."
Knoche scored at 57:16 off a McGrath assist to give Cal its final goal and a 9-0 lead.
The persistent Wildcats scored their lone goal at 62:18, as Lisa Landoe set up Tyler Kirkland's strike against Jessica Pizarek, Cal's third goalkeeper of the day. A freshman, Pizarek also made her first appearance of the season today.
The Bears, who started senior Kelly Knoche and brought on redshirt freshman Maddie Hand before Pizarek, did not record a goalkeeper save, though they did get a defensive save from Katie Knoche. Davidson likewise played three goalies, with starter Brittany Rollek allowing four goals and second goalie Christa Goeke giving up five goals. Goeke made all three of the Wildcats' saves. Mary Clay, the third goalie, did not allow a goal or make a save.
Cal plays its next three games on the road. The Bears take on Old Dominion at 2 p.m. PT on Wednesday, Oct. 15, in Norfolk, Va., then play Delaware at 10 a.m. PT on Friday, Oct. 17, in a neutral-site game in Richmond, Va., and finish the road trip against No. 3 Wake Forest at 10 a.m. PT on Sunday, Oct. 19, in Winston-Salem, N.C.
