Northwestern Shuts Out Cal, 3-0

The California field hockey team completed its three-game Midwest road trip with a 3-0 loss at the hands of Northwestern Tuesday afternoon in Evanston, Ill. Despite allowing three goals, Cal keeper Maddie Hand collected a personal-best 14 saves. Cal drops to 3-8 on the season, while the Wildcats improve to 11-4.
Northwestern's Courtney Plaster recorded the first score of the game in the 24th minute. Plaster blasted a shot from five yards out that was partially blocked by Hand's foot, but still managed to sneak past her and into the cage. The Wildcats scored once more in the first half on a goal by Jill Putnam to take a 2-0 lead at the break.
In the second half, Elizabeth Dobbs, who notched an assist on the second goal of the match, put the game away with her score in the 39th minute. Dobbs put Northwestern up by three when she deflected in a hard shot from a penalty corner. Chelsea Armstrong earned the assist.
Redshirt freshman Claire Dougherty and sophomore Jessica Kreck posted Cal's two shots on goal. Juniors Lisa Lohre and Sophie Sproats each recorded a shot.
Hand made 10 of her 14 saves in the first half.
The Wildcats outshot the Bears, 21-4, and Northwestern earned 14 corners to Cal's two.
The Bears return to Maxwell Family Field for a NorPac conference clash with UC Davis on Saturday, Oct. 10, at 1 p.m.
